This is the error I got with a larger hard drive (16 terabytes, also Western Digital, and also NTFS) on Ubuntu 22.04 (although the issue was not present on any of my drives with Ubuntu 20.04)
This issue is still unresolved, and I would like to get further help here. I have a temporary workaround using USB sticks, but it isn't going to hold up for long.

An #Ubuntu 24.04.3 upgrade left my computer unusable. Here's why and how I fixed it.
Two weekends ago I upgraded my Ubuntu desktop from 22.04 to 24.04.3. The upgrade failed. It was left unusable. This is because I opted, when asked, to keep my existing copy of the gdm-smartcard-pkcs11-exclusive configuration file because I don't use a smart card.
But it's a new config file and is REQUIRED. By saying I didn't want it updated, the update program didn't create it. The upgrade failed with "error: alternative path /etc/pam.d/gdm-smartcard-pkcs11-exclusive doesn’t exist" and "The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state." It was so much unusable.
The upgrader might as well have said, "Enter N if you want your system to become unusable."
The upgrade program should never have asked. If the file is required and it isn't there, it should have just created it.
gdm3 (login), ubuntu-desktop, and ubuntu-desktop-minimal weren't installed. PAM (authentication) wasn't set up.
