Ended Monday and welcomed Tuesday after a walk under azure skies with Three Strange Angels by Peter Garland, released in 2008 on Tzadik,
Review by Anthony Tognazzini
Released on John Zornβs Tzadik label, THREE STRANGE ANGELS is actually a reissue of recordings made by avant-garde composer Peter Garland near the beginning of his career. The spare, lyrical compositions reflect Garlandβs interest in traditional Native American and Mexican music, as well as the minimalist strain of American experimental music. With an ensemble that includes violin, harp, recorder, and percussion, Garland and company create delicate sonic tapestries that are as lovely as they are otherworldly.

Undertaker Please Drive Slow by Shane Parish, released on Tzadik in 2016.
"A long time resident of the Appalachian town of Asheville, North Carolina, Shane Parish is the mastermind behind the cutting edge rock band
Ahleuchatistas. Here he steps out with a remarkable and soulful acoustic solo project that digs deep into Appalachian roots. Taking classic old timey folk songs, Shane has abstracted them in utterly fascinating ways evoking the haunting and brooding world of the American South. At times reminiscent of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, at times of John Cage and Morton Feldman, Shane uses these beautiful songs as launching pads for his creative flights of fancy, at times boiling them down to their very essence. A spiritual project that will keep you riveted from first note to last." β John Zorn

Ended the weekend and welcomed the start of the week after my swim with Peter Garland: Love Songs released in 2005 on Tzadik
Review by Blair Sanderson
Peter Garland's soft-edged, quasi-minimalist music is sometimes described as "romantic," because his open lyricism, simple modes, and pretty timbres play on emotions and summon sentimental responses from some listeners....Percussionist William Winant, violinists David Abel, Carla Kihlstedt, Roy Malan, and Timb Harris, and pianists Julie Steinberg and Heather Heise are mellow and quite subdued in these performances, which is all the music requires. Tzadik's sound is surprisingly loud for such laid-back performances, so watch the volume.
