And the Oscar for the best TV dinner goes to 🥁…

Here’s the annual mieng kum, or miang kham, from our very first — now almost 28 year old — Thai cookbook.

Savory-sweet shrimp paste based relish is flavored with galangal, fish sauce, roasted shallots, and coconut. It complements the fixings — roasted peanuts, shallots, roasted shaved coconut, dried shrimp, chopped lime, Thai Dragon peppers, and ginger — that go into leaf wraps beautifully. Each bite is a surprise with different levels of hot, and sweet, and salty, and sour, and umami.

An interactive meal that is hard to beat.

@krutonium Even if it's just a 15' break to take a piss and grab a new drink, #nachos, #popcorn or ice would be fine.

  • Personally, the coolest thing a #cinema could come up with is if they had airliner-style tray tables and people could basically order a fancy "#TVdinner" style plate to get served whilst watching or at like the 2nd half...
    • But that's just me knowing that this isn't a challenge with #catering and like with an #airline this can be done with minimal equipment and staff onsite...

Wait, I guess what I know as Salisbury Steak always was frozen, anyway.

(must come in a metal tray. One of the compartments must still be frozen, and another one so hot you can't eat it).

People from Gen X dearly miss their Swanson frozen dinners. Here's why they disappeared.

Writing Nostalgia on a Cold Rainy Day 🌧️📺

One of my fondest memories from the late ’50s and early ’60s is the “TV dinner.” While my mom was an incredible cook, on busy nights those foil-tray meals brought comfort, convenience, and a touch of excitement to the Smith household.

It seems that in commercial and most restaurant sauces the degree of heat rises proportionately with the amount of salt — the hotter the sauce the saltier it is.

We love spicy food but do feel the salt. With that, now if there’s a commercial sauce, I go for the mildest version and doctor it up myself. There are so many ways that, besides the heat, create different flavor combinations!

Here’re traditional Frank’s Buffalo — the only commercial buffalo without added sugar — amped by Kashmiri powder. Nice color, interesting flavor, and pleasant heat.

During the last movie night, these wings flew. Pun intended.

Wife left you?
She took the kids?
Your truck broke down?
Your dog died?
You can't cook?

Well, at least you can still have a Banquet (assuming you can operate an oven).
