25 December 2025 - Daily Drawing Day 359
#20252025Challenge
It's Christmas Day, so I decided to spend a good chunk of time giving the tumble dryer filter a thorough vacuum - something I really should have done sooner.

Fire crews tackle tumble dryer blaze in Penlan

Fire crews from Swansea Central and Morriston were called at 12.27am on Monday, November 10, after a tumble dryer was reported to be well alight in an outbuilding on Llangorse Road.

Using a hose reel jet, firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control before deploying a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots and a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke. Crews left the scene just over an hour later, at 1.34am, and visited neighbouring properties to hand out home fire safety advice.

Inside the outbuilding, the charred remains of the tumble dryer stood among blackened walls and smoke‑stained debris — a stark reminder of how quickly everyday household appliances can become a serious fire hazard.

There were no reports of any injuries or anyone being taken to hospital.

Fire service warning

Following the incident, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service reminded householders of the dangers posed by tumble dryers and other white goods.

A spokesperson said:

“We urge people never to leave appliances unattended — don’t turn your tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed. Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast‑moving parts that get very hot.

Don’t overload your machine, don’t put in items that have soaked up flammable liquids, and don’t ignore warning signs such as a burning smell or clothes that feel unusually hot at the end of a cycle.”

Fire service issues tumble dryer safety warning after kitchen blaze in Tumble

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) said crews from Tumble Fire Station were called to Derwen Road, Tumble, at 5.16pm on Wednesday 3 September.

The fire was confined to the kitchen table, chairs and flooring, and had been extinguished before firefighters arrived. Crews cooled debris and isolated the property’s tumble dryer. The cause is believed to have been laundry taken from the dryer and placed on the table.

After ensuring the fire was fully out, firefighters carried out a Home Fire Safety Check at the property before leaving the scene at 6.13pm.

Following the incident, MAWWFRS has reminded residents to take extra care when using tumble dryers and other white goods. Safety tips include:

  • Never leaving appliances running when you go out or go to bed
  • Avoiding overloading tumble dryers or placing items inside that have been used to soak up flammable liquids
  • Acting on warning signs such as a burning smell or unusually hot laundry at the end of a cycle

The service says anyone with concerns should have their appliance checked by a qualified professional.

MAWWFRS also offers free Safe and Well Visits in people’s homes, which include fitting and checking smoke alarms, identifying fire hazards, and giving tailored advice on escape plans and fire prevention.

More information on white goods safety and booking a Safe and Well Visit is available on the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service website.

Pontarddulais Tumble Dryer fire a reminder over White goods safety says Fire Service

At 6.25pm on Tuesday, January 7th, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) crews from Pontarddulais and Gorseinon Fire Stations responded to an incident at Ffordd Cambria in Pontarddulais.

Crews responded to a tumble dryer fire, the property’s occupier had removed the appliance from the property prior to the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Service crews.

Crews utilised one hose reel jet, one ladder and one thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.  The appliance was completely destroyed by fire, thankfully, no casualties were injured.  Crews left the scene at 7.04pm.

Following the fire, MAWWFRS issued the following statement:

“Never leave appliances unattended – don’t turn your tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed.  Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast-moving parts that get very hot.

“Don’t overload your tumble dryer or put in items that have been used to soak up flammable liquids including cooking oil.

“Don’t ignore warning signs – if you can smell burning or have clothes that feel hotter at the end of the cycle, have your appliance checked by a professional.”

More information on white goods safety can be found on the MAWWFRS website.

White Goods

Anyone have any recommendations for a front loader washing machine (NOT Miele)?
Also does anyone have experience of a heat pump clothes dryer or condenser clothes dryer?

Brands have to available in #NZ

Interesting factoid that I suspect @TechConnectify could do a video on:

My new washer-dryer's safety instructions make a point that the water supply must be (a) cold and (b) turned on during the drying cycle.

i can hear why this is.

It's using regular bursts of cold water to cool things.

My old washer-dryer may have done this too, but it wasn't audible; so I never spotted it.

These are not like the tumble dryers of yesteryear.

Dead Electrolux,

I like your product but what the fuck?

Best regards,
a valued customer

There is an anti-crease function, but I'm not sure how effective it is after I took the stuffs out of the dryer.

#EarthDay 🌍 #climateAction question: Considering that Americans have only environmentally abusive options for clothing dryers, does it make sense to install an electrical outlet and drain pipe in every closet to accommodate a dehumidifier?

The idea is that dehumidifying a closet would likely waste a lot less energy than a vented #tumbleDryer. Yes, heat pump dryers exist in the US (barely), and if you can find one it has an absurd price tag upwards of $1k & holds ½ as much clothing.

@mamday Found another #MastodonBug: hashtags used on poll ballot options fail to get indexed. E.g. the parent msg of this one is missing from search results on #tumbleDryer, #climateAction & #climateChange.
