Join Old‑School Greyhawk, New‑School Thrills: A 5E Workshop - Roll20 - Game Master Workshop | StartPlaying Games

This is a webinar/class, not a game session! Greyhawk has always been a world of frontiers—wild borders, crumbling empires, and mysteries older than the maps that claim to contain them. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to bring that classic, dangerous energy to your 5E tables without rewriting the entire ruleset. You’ll learn how to capture the tension, scarcity, and player‑driven exploration that defined early Greyhawk play, while still giving modern players the clarity, pacing, and spotlight balance they expect from 5E. Together, we’ll break down the core pillars of old‑school Greyhawk—factions, friction, and the unknown—and translate them into practical tools you can use immediately. From reaction rolls and morale checks to rumor webs, wilderness clocks, and consequence‑driven worldbuilding, you’ll see how small mechanical shifts can completely transform the feel of your campaign. We’ll also look at how to adapt classic modules and regions of the Flanaess for today’s players, preserving the danger and weirdness that made them iconic while avoiding the pitfalls of outdated design. You’ll watch a live encounter conversion, walk through a case study of updating a classic Greyhawk adventure, and learn how to create a living world where factions remember what your players do—and what they fail to do. Whether you’re a veteran GM looking to deepen your craft or a newer DM curious about old‑school playstyles, this workshop will give you the tools to run Greyhawk with confidence, clarity, and a sense of wonder. If you’ve ever wanted your 5E games to feel more dangerous, more mysterious, and more alive, this is your invitation to step into the Flanaess and rediscover what made Greyhawk legendary.

I think ~half of the mediocre RPG setting guides could take a stride toward the awesome if their writers took this one bit of advice to heart:

If you have nothing gameable or evocative to say about X, you're allowed to say nothing about X.

If you'd like to have statblocks for existing D&D monsters at new levels of play, check out this supplement!

I am on of the writers on this project 📝 A couple of the monsters I designed include an aboleth egg and a corrupted decaton! 🤖 #ttrpgDesign #DnD #ttrpg

Buffed/replaced many attribute roll based actions and how strong weaknesses are based on solo combat testing.

Replaced 4 starting gear.

Improved how character creation shifts to rebalance the players based on how many players are in the party.

Changed how "leveling up" and gaining max health effectively works.

Moved bonus damage from agility to its own stat based on agility for clarity.

Armour is now gear instead of max health.

Changed how you learn rituals.

First playtest of Central Air and Chassis v0.5 went well! As usual, my players felt the humor was a highlight but the ending needed work 😅 I dunno what it is, but satisfying endings are just not something that comes naturally to me! I need to run more one shots and minicampaigns to get more practice, I suppose 😌

Designing a corrupted creature this week where the problem isn't the power.

It's the interpretation.
She's still listening to the ocean. The ocean is still speaking.

She just stopped hearing it correctly, and has no way to know that.

Last week: a creature that hesitates before aggression.

This week: a creature that hesitates before retreat.

Same architecture, but inverted. The Fraddam Seer is what the Coral Priestess becomes when the signal corrupts.

Design angle - Designing an encounter this week that doesn't have to happen. The Priestess isn't waiting to fight you. She's been reading the reef's memory of your approach since before you arrived.

The design question: what does pressure feel like when it never raises its voice?
