At a Starbucks today. Realize I still remember the incantations to order a beverage here. Then I remembered 22 years ago, Ueno Tokyo Starbucks.

I had just arrived the night before, after the second longest plain flight of my life, DC to Tokyo. Overnight was spent in the oddest "hotel" room I had ever seen. The bathroom had been entirely prefab!

A Starbucks was just down the road, its overhead a spider web of cables. I walked into the store. Pulled out my phrase book. I practiced and practiced my coffee order. I hoped my Japanese would be vaguely communicative.

I stepped to the front of the line. I uttered the syllables in broken Japanese. Turning to the barista, the cashier announced,

"Grande mocha!"
