Some thirsty #hornets engaging in a bit of #trophallaxis during the very hot weather last week. I initially thought they were fighting, and they were at it for about 10 minutes before flying off. Apologies for the terrible camera work.

How do complex social behaviors evolve and shape species' success? Here https://doi.org/10.1038/s42003-025-07688-7 we reveal how a key social behavior in ants - mouth-to-mouth food sharing #trophallaxis - emerged as ants opportunistically exploited new ecological niches as terrestrial environments changed.

My Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony enjoyed feasting on a beheaded dubia roach yesterday. I also found a relatively large larva in the nest and, while I was trying to get a shot of it, caught some #trophallaxis in progress, too. Maybe the colony is finally large enough for some real #polymorphism!

Lickety-spit: how bees use trophallaxis to easily communicate
by Rusty Burlew

Bees exchange food and information through trophallaxis. Note their extended tongues.

Trophallaxis is direct bee-to-bee transfer of food and information. It’s used by social insects like honey bees to communicate vital information about colony health and supplies.

I had a wonderful lecture by @Adria about social communication and evolutionary transitions in ants 🐜 πŸ’ made me thinking about evolution of socially transmitted materials.. πŸ“š

Also very nice learning format set by @jkoene @[email protected]
