This "simian" tendency to see relations as trees must be in our DNA, since instinctive understanding of the topology of trees and branches has been a necessary skill for our ancestors during millions of years. Indeed tree diagrams are immediately grasped by everyone, whereas other structures like DAGs, lattices, permutation groups etc. will be inscrutable to many people.
