"The view over Mtskheta from Jvari Monastery"

Jvari Monastery stands on the rocky mountaintop at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, overlooking the town of Mtskheta, one of the oldest cities of Georgia and its former capital.

It is located approximately 20 kilometres north of Tbilisi.

"Chreli-Abano"

With its splendidly tiled mosque-like facade, Chreli-Abano (sometimes called Orbeliani Baths) is without a doubt the most iconic bathhouse in Tbilisi.

Tbilisi’s baths are very different to those in Istanbul, Budapest, or anywhere else.

The location for the city was chosen because of the natural hot springs that course underground (Tbilisi means "warm place"). Persian-Ottoman style bath houses were erected atop this geothermal playground, most of them in Abanotubani, the Old Town’s iconic sulfur bath district.

"Tbilisi Sulfur Baths"

The location for the city was chosen because of the natural hot springs that course underground (Tbilisi means "warm place"). Persian-Ottoman style bath houses were erected atop this geothermal playground, most of them in Abanotubani, the Old Town’s iconic sulfur bath district.

One of Tbilisi’s most recognisable neighbourhoods, Abanotubani is characterised by the brick domes that pop out of the earth like molehills. This design allows natural light to stream into the bath rooms and provides ventilation for the sulfuric steam to escape.

"Kaleidoscope House"

In its heyday, mosaic stained glass was a common architectural feature of Tbilisi. Sadly most examples have been lost to time – but there are a few buildings that still boast gorgeous rainbow windows.

One of Tbilisi’s most recognisable landmarks, the "Kaleidoscope House" has large multi-coloured glass windows on all three sides of its front stairway. When the afternoon sun hits at just the right angle, it paints a colourful pattern onto the stairs and wooden balustrades.

"Betlemi Street Stairs"

On the steep slopes between the Narikala fortress and the old town of Tbilisi, the Betlemi Street Stairs offer superb views of the city below, and the stunning Mother of Georgia statue nearby.

These streets meander between the old brick houses clinging to the slope, with a few shaded terraces allowing a well-deserved break.

"Gondola lift to Narikala fortress"

Historically, Tbilisi had seven different aerial tramways, but all of them closed after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Since 2012, Tbilisi has a modern, high-capacity gondola lift which operates between Rike Park and the Narikala fortress.

"Overlooking Tbilisi"

Narikala is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi and the Mtkvari (Kura) River.

The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulfur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. On the lower court there is the recently restored St Nicholas church.
