XE-300 looks great!

But I'm nervous, because there are two variants for the #EU (#EMEA), but none of the would work e.g. in #Uruguay, and I'm not sure about #Argentina. The version for #LatinAmerica wouldn't be the best for #Europe, though. I'ld love to see a global variant.

XE-750 seems to have a global version (EG25-G), though. If it only had a battery…

Any good, 4G/5G #mobileRouter #travelRouter #portableRouter?

Must work at least in #EU and #Mercosur.
Must not depend on an "app"! Web UI is fine.
Single #SIM is OK, no need for dual SIM.
Robust, small, cheap, good, of course 🙂
RJ45 nice to have.

TIA!

I’ve been looking for a project router for our travels, so we can ditch #WiFi provided by hosts and bring our own.

I was hoping #UniFi #TravelRouter would be THE THING, but it’s missing one key feature I’d give my money for - optional simcard slot…

#GliNet still looks far more compelling, because it’s more open and you can just make 5G modem work with it…

For some reason, I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of #DLNA.

I’ve been tinkering with the idea of an off-grid setup for when electricity or internet is down and built around my GL.iNet Slate AX travel router.

Sure, it’s not #plex or #jellyfin but it’s close enough when it can be run for days/weeks off a battery bank.

GL.iNet Mudi 7 specs are out and it's now available for pre-order ($319, down from a $399 price target for general release), to ship in April.

https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-e5800/

noteworthy details:

* 5G and 4G, 6x internal and optional 2x external antennas
* dual SIM support
* tri-band WiFi 7, 1x 2.5GbE port
* 600Mbps Wireguard and 700Mbps OpenVPN
* USB type-C tethering and OTG
* quad-core Qualcomm CPU
* 2GB RAM and 8GB eMMC
* up to 13.5h battery life and USB-PD fast charge

given that it's a Qualcomm CPU I would not expect mainline OpenWrt support any time real soon, but it will be running GL.iNet's build of OpenWrt + their software, and should have access to most packages available on vanilla OpenWrt.

based on my experiences with #GLiNet I would wait for the firmware to stabilize before buying this, with the expectation that increasing competition in the travel router space will push that $399 price target down over time.

The latest UniFi Travel Router firmware update, version 6.5.246, has a couple improvements I’m excited for:

1. The UTR can now uplink to Wi-Fi networks that use 802.1x, or “enterprise” authentication.

2. It can broadcast a secondary network—useful for people who have an IOT SSID at home and want to travel with things that connect to that network. (But the mobile app doesn’t support configuring this just yet.)

This gl.inet router combo is just... awesome! Not perfect (10gbe NIC's and vLAN's are missing), but the best value for money proposition I have seen so far. Being a client of their terrific KVM's I just could not stay away. :-)
