In February 2026, the state of Kansas passed Senate Bill 244, which requires that all government-issued IDs, including driver’s licenses and birth certificates, reflect a person’s sex assigned at birth. This law retroactively invalidated any previously updated IDs for transgender residents, meaning licenses that previously reflected a person’s gender identity are now considered invalid as of February 26, 2026 (ACLU Kansas, NBC News, Advocate.com). The law also prohibits future changes to gender markers on Kansas-issued IDs.
Since then, further draconian laws restricting gender variant people have sprung up throughout the US - particularly (but not limited to) the Midwest and South. Here is a list of organizations offering support and aid to trans and non-binary people during this dark time in history.
