After #Teuken7b and #Olmo2, Apertus is the next big jump in capabilities and performance of #FOSS #LLMs, while also improving #epistemicresilience and #epistemicautonomy with its multilingual approach.

I believe that especially for sensitive areas like #education, #healthcare, or #academia, there is no alternative to fully open #AI models. Everybody should start building upon them and improving them.

I've learned from literature and colleagues that infrastructure is visible when it fails. Maybe algorithms and AI systems are also mainly visible when they fail, e.g., when you get bad recommendations.

Potential dilemma: we either have a working invisible black box or a failed visible AI system (visibility as a step toward transparency). Is it possible to simultaneously have transparency, visibility, and working AI systems? Do we want AI to be visible?

💡 Interesting read on how one of the biggest commercial players out there plans to use Mozilla Open Voice data to make speech AI more inclusive and open to more language.

💬 Sounds idealistic, but Open Voice datasets are created by unpaid volunteers who donate hours and hours of their speech. Not sure whether I feel comfortable with that, tbh.
