How your smartphone could help unlock the mystery of the monarch butterfly's migration from Mexico
A total of 160 monarchs across Mexico’s six butterfly sanctuaries have been tagged with new transmitters that will provide the most detailed look to date at the first leg of the the insects' migration back north.

1985: me and my friend from highschool experimenting with 2 transistor home built FM #transmitters, later #Stentor kit from the #Netherlands, transmitting between 105,6/105,7/105,8 MHz (depending on how much TX had drifted) and putting 1km "not spot" into comms for British Rail and Reading Buses on their then new Stornophone #VHF radio schemes (which bizarrely had mobile TX on 150+MHz and base on 105-106 MHz (this portion of the band wasn't officially allocated to broadcasting back then!)

2025: working with my friends at #IpswichCommunityRadio doing it all legally on 105.7 - 50W TX power, stereo, digital soundprocessing, dynamic RDS, about 30-40km range, full telemetry on the transmitter and bandpass filter so we don't upset anyone else on the band.

Listening to Em's 80s Hour of Fun last night (she featured 1985 on the episode) reminded me of this (and that 40 years have passed since I started being involved with #radio!)

(en eindelijk na 40 jaar kan ik ook de andere kant van de bouwfolder (die was in het Nederlands geschreven) voor de Stentor lezen!)

THE AUTHORITY’S STATIONS IN 1962

Our final trip back to 1962 to see what's going on with the ITA's  #transmitters takes us to north and west #Wales, soon to be the home of #TeleduCymru

#DIY #SmartHome :
Here I describe how I implemented it at my home. I have used #433MHz actuators and #transmitters .Of course, another radio system can be used, the steps remain the same

1) Buy simple radio sockets or #actuators on 433MHz basis

2) Get a 433MHz #gateway

3) Get a simple and cheap android #tablet and mount it flush to the wall

4) Install the app on the wall tablet and on your devices. I use #PowerSwitch

5) Add your actuators to the app, create rooms, #scenes , timers, and more

Finally #FiguredOut why the remotes for the #GarageDoorOpener stopped working. Don't put #LEDBulbs into the opener, they must have been interfering with the signals from the #transmitters #NowIknow

More outbreaks of #infectious #diseases in the future?

As a result of climate change, #transmitters of #dengue like the mosquito, Aedes albopictus, are projected to increase! Giving higher risk of #outbreaks.

Heatwaves, spread of infectious diseases due to climate change growing health threats to Europeans

Unprecedented heatwaves — as seen this year — are the greatest direct climate-related health threat to Europe’s population. Heatwaves already account for numerous deaths and illnesses. This burden is set to increase without more climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. Heat-health action plans, urban greening, better building design and adjusting working times can contribute to better protect the most vulnerable groups in society, according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report published today.

These ART400 #pager #transmitters (made in England and very good pieces of kit) always require the program enable pin to be grounded on the programming cable (here I'm using a jumper wire and an old PC motherboard connector on the red/black twisted cable) even to just read the config from the EEPROM!

If you /don't/ connect it, the config program returns a comms error and its easy to wrongly suspect the #RS232 to be acting up (you can see I even reinstalled the usb adapter drivers there!)
