as of last night's viewing session, i'm now ~1/3 thru S5 of #GilmoreGirls [being my 3rd or 4th series watch/rewatch, iirc]. it's set mainly in USA's Connecticut, & made+set in the early Oughties. at about that same time, in [mainly] straya, i was #transitioning, & ironically knew nothing of GG til being introduced to it by some of my merkan friends in thailand during rehab after some of our surgeries.
much as i mostly love this series, each re-viewing brings some jarring moments, which i struggle to explain & which kinda hit like a tummy punch. now & then, it makes #gay / #lesbian jokes, & at least one time albeit i vaguely think there might be a second, #trans jokes. they are toned not as in-jokes by empathic allies; they are punching-down meannesses. two examples;
- "that woman looks like she's a man" [laughter ensued]
- "we [lorelai & luke, spoken by lorelai] could go on the run, & both of us have a sex change; you'd have to have one too, so then we could still hold hands & kiss in public, otherwise it would be weird"
what was the vanilla public's #LGBTQI "mood" like in US, especially New England, in the early Oughties?
