A diagonal diverter lets bikes through and stops cars. That's not a compromise. That's the goal.

It cuts a four-way intersection diagonally. Cars can't make through movements. Bikes and pedestrians pass through the gap. Cut-through traffic disappears. Cycling gets a direct route. The street gets quieter. Local access remains. This is what residential street prioritization looks like.

The road you designed is the speed your drivers chose. That's on the engineer.

When speeds consistently exceed the posted limit, the default explanation is driver behavior. But if the geometry communicates a higher speed, drivers are responding to the design. That's a design failure. Engineers who design roads that produce speeds above the limit have designed the wrong road.

Paint and posts make crossings safer near schools: shorter distances, more visibility, slower turns. California law clears 20 feet for parking near crosswalks. Quick-build safety. #MrBarricade #SchoolSafety #TrafficCalming #CompleteStreets
Here's an original traffic calming measure I saw in Madrid: Protected Peafowl wandering the streets.

They're large and slow and confident enough to wander in the middle of roads, and drivers know they'd get heavy fines for injuring them.

Five weeks after drivers complained about long waits after a concert in downtown St. Louis, 4 bump-outs, traffic safety features at intersections, were removed. Five weeks. With no public meetings, no engagement. The city repeatedly tells us it takes months, even years to get community feedback on road changes. But this time, it took 5 weeks with no public meetings. It's been made clear that traffic flow for commuters is more important than safety for residents.

If I lived on that street, I would set up a tyre garage, alloy wheel refurb place and bodyshop nearby 😁

Presumably this is deliberate, to discourage SUVs and other larger vehicles from that lane whilst letting through smaller ones - I think it needs more signs on approach (like a similar #TrafficCalming scheme in Britain would use), but surely its obvious to those in larger #cars that their vehicle may not easily fit through that gap, and they should take the lane to the left?

City of Vienna has created new traffic calming concept in some neighborhoods aiming to reduce and eliminate the transiting car traffic. Inspired by Barcelona's Superblock, but in Vienna it is #Supergrätzl. They use so called the transport filters, which are the physical barriers to make obstacle for cars. #mobility #trafficcalming #vienna #superblock

Just thinking about how much it must cost a community to install and operate #traffic citation cameras, and the real social and economic costs of that kind of #surveillance, #policing, and #punishment, when they could have just installed static #TrafficCalming #infrastructure that harms no one and require very little ongoing financial inputs.
