Interview: Axeblade (Italy)

14–20 minutes

The Nwothm

Axeblade’s rise has been fast, focused and fuelled entirely by passion. Formed in the aftermath of the pandemic by musicians scattered across Lombardy, Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, the band has carved out its place in the Italian heavy and speed metal scene through determination, tight songwriting and a commitment to the stage above all else. Their self‑titled debut, released through Witches Brew Records in 2025, captures the raw energy that first brought them together, but it’s in the rehearsal room and under stage lights that Axeblade truly reveal their identity. With momentum building and their name appearing on more festival bills, the band stands at a moment where everything feels possible. This interview explores their origins, their influences and the spirit driving Axeblade forward.

Interview

TheNwothm: For anyone discovering you for the first time, how would you introduce Axeblade in your own words and how would you describe the energy you bring as a band

A.B: Hello and thanks for the interview. So Axeblade is a heavy metal band I created in 2021, just after the pandemic years. I wanted to start a new pure heavy metal band after my experience with Ruler. I contacted Paola as singer and Luca as guitarist and we started playing together. We had some problems finding a permanent drummer, until we met Marco Wallace. He was perfect for us and in 2024 we recorded our first album Axeblade. We signed a deal with Witches Brew records and our album was released in april 2025. Then in summer 2025 Roberto Guerra joined us in the band as second axe and this made our sound stronger and more compact. We played several concerts – playing live is fundamental for us. You can do the best studio album, but in my opinion, the real exam for a band is playing on stage. As musicians and metalheads, we couldn’t live without this emotion.

TheNwothm: Your home bases span Lombardy, Piedmont and the Aosta Valley. How did musicians from three very different northern Italian regions end up forming a heavy and speed metal band together?

A.B: We’ve known each other for years as metal festival goers. For example, Paola and I have been friends for many years and when I was looking for a singer, I immediately thought of her. The same with Luca. He was looking for someone to play with and I contacted him. We live in different regions but, believe me, sometimes it’s really difficult to find good musicians near home. Roberto Marco and I live quite close, and rehearsals take place in Turin, our headquarters. In 2026 the distance is not a problem, the most important thing is the attitude and the desire to play Heavy Metal.

Luca: At the time I was looking for a band and, in my area, I couldn’t find anyone that shared passion for old school heavy metal and I saw a post on Facebook from Paolo that was looking for people to form a new band. So, I joined him and Paola to make this happen.

Paola: We share the same passion, so it came out naturally! Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

TheNwothm: What is the story behind choosing the name Axeblade and what made it feel like the right identity for the music you wanted to create?

Paolo: We all thought it was a really good name for an heavy metal band and many bands from the 80’s had words like Sword, Axe, Blade in their name and we just wanted to follow this tradition. I think yes, our name can represent our music and our style.

A.B: Paolo had the right name for us, and it turned out that there was no other Axeblade band.

TheNwothm: Northern Italy has its own mix of industrial cities, mountain landscapes and regional traditions. Which parts of your surroundings have shaped your writing or attitude as a band?

Luca: For example, I live in the northern part of Italy, Aosta Valley is at the border with France and Switzerland and there aren’t big cities or big industries, only mountains, cold and very few people. These elements have shaped my writing. In this landscape you have a lot of time for thinking, relaxing and write music in the most comfortable way. I spend my free time listening to music and there I find inspiration. Music sometimes comes from a book or from a feeling and the quiet at my place helps the entire process

Paola: Turin has a tradition of metal music (not specifically heavy metal, though) which might be traced back to the underground social culture and the foundry sound itself, just like the mighty Birmingham.

TheNwothm: Looking back to when you were growing up did you always want to be a musician? And what bands and artists inspired you to become one?

Paolo: Yes! When I was 13 I discovered heavy metal and my dream was to play it. I saw Manowar the first time when I was 16 in 1994 and at the end of the concert, I told myself: “ Paolo, this will be your life!”. Then my parents gave me my first bass just to learn and I started my dream.  As a bass player my principal influence is Steve Harris… I love his style and his technique, how he stays on stage…I’d lying if I told you I don’t take inspiration from him. Another bass players I really like are Geezer Butler, Joey Vera, Timi Hansen (rip) Rudy Sarzo and Bob Daisley.

Luca: I started to listen to heavy metal at the age of 8 because of my mother that was a Kiss fan and my uncle who was a thrash metal fan and since then I wanted to play guitar. I started to play at the age of 11 and my very first band came a couple of year after. I wanted to be a musician but in Italy it’s so hard to become someone. It’s easier in other countries. My main inspiration are Iron Maiden, King Diamond and Kiss above all. I was impressed by Ace Frehley’s playing and I guess all started with him. Over the year I started to include some Us metal and Nwobhm elements in my music. Basically, all the 80s classic metal scene is my influence with some of 70s rock and progressive.

Paola: I love the energy of live music, as a fan more than anything else, love the atmosphere of metal concerts, it nurtures my soul. I guess it’s like walking on the foreshore, you end up floating and swimming. I’m devoted to King Diamond, Rob Halford, RJDio, Warrell Dane, Eric Adams – they give me goosebumps

Wallace: It just happened, I started playing, the stage was on fire, and I liked it. My heart is for Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Motörhead above all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsdfunBwo2M

TheNwothm: So let’s jump into the music! I want you to think back to around 2021, when it all really began. In those early days, were you mainly jamming out to covers, or had you already started putting together a few original songs to get things moving?

Paolo: We wanted to play original songs in order to record an album and play concerts. We didn’t begin with covers, we put our musical ideas soon. We also play some covers in our live shows like Evil of Mercyful Fate or Thundersteel of Riot, but just to have fun with our fans.

Meggi: We didn’t start with covers. I remember that at our first rehearsal I came up with a song (it was Hellraiser) that I wrote for Axeblade when Paolo hired me. At the time we had Hellraiser and Screamin Demons in Your Head in its embryonal form. Later we included a couple of covers for our live shows. We started with Judas Priest’s Jawbreaker and Manowar’s Metal Daze. I always wanted to play original songs instead of covers, so we started with originals since the beginning.

Wallace: I joined Axeblade in 2024, back in 2021 I was at the last chapter of my experience of the HM band “Heavy Generation”, with Ivan Giannini, who, right afterwards, joined Vision Divine

Paola: The tracks in Axeblade are sorted in order of composition. We started playing live with five songs and recorded the album when we reached number eight. It came out naturally, the music was literally happening before us

TheNwothm: Considering your debut album came out last year did you have a focus mostly on playing shows to begin with or was putting together a record a labour of love?

Paolo: We started playing some concerts in North Italy but our goal was to record an album as soon as possible to let us known better. When we were ready with the songs, we entered Studio to record our first album.

Luca: At the beginning we focused on playing live shows. I think that live performance is the most important thing. For example, it happened that I listened to a record from a band that I discovered to suck at live performance. We wanted to be real, to be compact at live shows. We wanted so badly to make a record but in the first two years we had issues with drummers. We changed 4 of them before our final one. Only in 2024 we started to put together all the songs for a debut album. Now we’re working on a second one that we are planning to release in summer/autumn 2026.

Wallace: we’ve got plenty of love to spread, that’s why we’re already working on our next killer album!

Paola: live performance is our dimension, we’re eager to play, and we’re also in a very creative moment, and some new songs are coming to life. I feel blessed for the energy that runs in this band. Can’t wait for the second chapter.

TheNwothm: What can you tell us about your debut album Axeblade? Were all the songs written for your debut or does it feature some material from your earlier days?

Paolo: Most of them were written for the debut, but something belongs to our past…for example the riff of Screaming Demons is from a band I had at school when I was 18, Time Can’t Wait was originally written by Luca when he was 16….we tried to put all our passions for heavy metal in this album.

Luca: Most of the songs were made for the record but a couple of them came from my early days. Time Can’t Wait was written when I was 16. The only change that I’ve made is to rewrite the solo. I’m not so proud of my early music but that song was special to me and I wanted to use it for Axeblade. I prefer to write new music and for the new record all the songs are made together without any past ones.

Wallace: a few songs came a long way from personal experience from Paolo and Meggi, other songs are recent, consider that the title track Axeblade was written when we were about to rec! All songs are finalized and arranged in rehearsals.

TheNwothm: What is the story behind your albums artwork and who is the amazing artist behind it?

Paolo: Thanks for this compliment! The artist is our guitarist Luca. He’s a really good designer and he has done all the artwork of our album. When he let us see the cover I couldn’t believe my eyes how good it was!

Luca: I used to draw as passion in my free time and my band mates suggested to me some elements to do the artwork and I tried to draw some. At the beginning the cover was different, it had a castle behind the sorcerer but we agreed to remove it. I am quite satisfied with the result.

TheNwothm: The closing track Axeblade shares the band name. What made that song the right one to carry your banner?

Paolo: Axeblade is the last song of the album and the last song we composed for it. It’s a manifesto of what we are, speed but also catchy and melodic. I think it’s the perfect song to close an album and a concert too.

Luca: Well maybe Axeblade can be consider our anthem to carry our flag to people, but Hellraiser as well can be the candidate.

Wallace: Because it goes like this and I can’t stop singing it! I am the master, hammer of justice, we’re living by the law of Axeblade

TheNwothm: If you could collaborate with any musician from the heavy metal world, past or present, who would you choose and what kind of track would you want to create together?

Paolo: There are too many great musicians in the story of heavy metal to choose just one. I could answer I’d like to play with Iron Maiden, but I think they just have a good bass player hahahah… maybe I’d like to create something with Judas Priest because it’s another band I really love….or with Mercyful Fate. Playing or creating a song with this incredible musicians would be a dream. I don’t know which song. Each song from them is amazing!

Luca: If I can choose someone from the past I wanted to collaborate with people like early progressive masters as Yes, early Genesis. I listen to various artists and it’s hard to choose someone. Actually in heavy metal I wanted to have a collaboration with Andy Sneap and Davy Vain for their skills as sound engineers and with Andy LaRocque for his taste in guitar riffing and solos (Andy Sneap is a great guitarist as well by the way. Just remember of old Sabbat). If he’s was alive a wanted to collaborate with Peter Steele because in my opinion he was a genius and I wanted to create more obscure heavy metal songs with the sound of King Diamond and the power riffing of Carnivore.

Wallace: It’s like love, you cannot choose. But Demon is my best choice!

TheNwothm: Looking back over the bands history, what has been your most memorable gig so far and what made that night stand out?

Paolo: Every gig we played was a great experience. We played with bands like Helstar, Vicious Rumors, Strana Officina but the best experience for us was at In The Best Tradition Festival. We were the opener but there were many people and seeing the crowd singing our songs was amazing for us. And sharing the stage with legends like Demon, Mytra, Oliver Dawson and great new bands like Solicitor, Sin Starlett and Battle Ram was incredible.

Luca: My memorable gig so far may be the one with Vicious Rumors. I really love them and I was so happy to share the stage with Us metal legends like them. Geoff Thorpe it’s a legend and he’s so handsome and friendly. At that gig people started to sing at our songs and I was so excited to hear that. I was crying inside. Other honorable mentions are the one with Helstar and the participation at In The Best Tradition Festival Vol 2 made by our friends Witchunter

Paola: I will always cherish the In The Best Tradition Festival, excellent organisation and feeling with the awesome Witchunter.

Wallace: it’s like an ever-growing feeling, every time we play I feel blessed and looking forward to the next experience.

TheNwothm: Which of the songs from Axeblade hits the hardest when played live and why do you think it connects so strongly with the audience

Paolo: I love playing all our songs, it’s an emotion for me. But I think Axeblade is the one who connects more strongly with the audience. I see people like a lot Ready For War, Necromantic and Time Can’t Wait too.

Luca: I guess Hellraiser, Axeblade and Ready For War create the most connection with audience for their powerful energy but I think new songs we’ll replace some of them in people’s heart.

Wallace: Axeblade closes the show, and it’s the perfect top of the climax.

Paola: I seek connection with people, is continuous feedback to and from the audience. Ready for War, Necromantic, Axeblade.

TheNwothm: What are your hopes for touring in the near future and are there any countries or festivals you would love to reach for the first time?

Paolo: I really hope to play in many metal festivals…it would be a dream for us to play for example at festival like Keep It True, Up The Hammers, Headbangers Open Air,  Muskelrock or Trvheim. Personally, I can’t wait to play in Germany. I played there several times in the past and it was always a blast. And I really would like to play in Spain, the metal scene in that country is amazing and I have many friends there! In May we’ll play for the first time in Portugal at the Metal Massacre Festival. We are looking forward to being there!

Luca: In the near future we’ll play at Massacre Fest in Portugal, made by Speed Demon guys and this year Frank Blackfire will be the headliner. I’m so excited for this. I want to play in country like Germany, maybe at festivals like Headbangers Open Air, Trueheim or Keep it True (I really hope this last one happens in the future) and in Greece. But I want to play oversea as well. I want to bring Axeblade everywhere. My dream will be Japan one day.

Wallace: I’d like to play in Spain and Greece, always had a great feeling with people on festivals in those countries.

Paola: It would be lovely to play in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and France.

TheNwothm: Now that your debut album is out in the world, what direction are you excited to explore next in your songwriting?

Paolo: We are just working on the songs for the second album. We can’t say anything yet, but the new songs will be fast, catchy and speedy. We want to see all the metalheads going headbanging when listening to Axeblade.

Luca: New songs are fast, especially the first one we wrote. We want to reach next level with new record and we want a better production and better sound than Axeblade.

TheNwothm: How can our readers buy your music, merch and support you online?

Paolo: You can write us an email to [email protected] or contact us on axeblade.official.  You can also write to our label Witches Brew Records

https://witchesbrew.eu/en. We are proud to announce that Axeblade is available in vinyl too!!! It’s limited to 200 copies so if you want a copy write us or Witches Brew.

TheNwothm: Anything else you would like to mention?

Paolo: Thanks for this interview, it was an honor and a pleasure talking with you guys! We hope to play always more live and to add many new fans and friend all around the world! And we can’t wait to deliver some new songs of us!

Luca: Thanks to you for your questions and I want to thank those who support us around the world and we hope to bring our music to everyone who want to listen to us. Music is life, metal is life and we want to share our passion with people. Our journey is just at the beginning.

Wallace: see you in a live show, whether on stage or not, enjoy live music.

Paola: Love Metal, live Metal: Heavy Metal Is The Law!

Chalice announce second album “Divine Spear” out February 2026 via Dying Victims Productions

On the 27th February 2026, Dying Victims Productions will release the highly anticipated second album from Finland’s Chalice, “Divine Spear,” available internationally on CD and vinyl LP formats.

Formed in Helsinki in 2016, Chalice have swiftly established themselves as a beacon of esoteric heavy metal. With members connected to bands such as Ranger, Satan’s Fall and Vincent Revenge, the group first unveiled a demo in 2017 followed by an EP in 2019, before delivering their acclaimed debut album “Trembling Crown” in 2020. That record showcased a dramatic and dynamic style which earned widespread recognition.

Now Chalice return with “Divine Spear,” a work that surpasses their debut in scope and ambition. True to its name, the album is a finely honed creation that reveals layers of sonic and emotional depth. Forged in the harsh Finnish winter, the record refines the band’s elegant approach, blending the spirit of classic European heavy metal with cinematic progressive elements and the sombre atmosphere of northern melancholy. While some passages unfold with patience, rewarding attentive listeners, the album ultimately paints a vivid landscape of light and shadow, pushing beyond the boundaries of the so‑called new wave of traditional metal.

Highlights include striking transitions into cleaner, quieter territory, heightening the drama that defined their first album. Chalice demonstrate masterful control of their craft, using their formidable skills to create awe‑inspiring compositions that invite listeners to immerse themselves fully in the narrative flow.

With production that is both crisp and natural, “Divine Spear” achieves a sound that is powerful yet warm, diving deeper than appearances suggest. Chalice continue to raise the banner of heavy metal high, offering a record that is as commanding as it is captivating.
