The “Grey Tower” (also known as the Count's Tower) in Nassau (Rhein-Lahn district/Rhineland-Palatinate) was part of the medieval city fortifications and was first mentioned in documents in 1414. It also served at times as a prison and a place of torture for women branded as witches.

Not much of the former city wall of Orsoy (municipality of Rheinberg, Lower Rhine, Wesel district) remains “representative” – except for the powder tower from around 1550, also known as the mill tower, as it was also the tower of a windmill from the 17th century until 1865.

Like the largely preserved town wall of the old town centre of Kaster (Bedburg/Rhein-Erft district), the Owl Tower, the core of which dates back to 1370 (with later additions such as the baroque dome), is made of bricks. In general, most of the older houses in this lowland region are built with bricks.
