Corn tortillas in California must now contain folic acid
California is the first state to require food makers to add folic acid, a crucial vitamin, to corn masa flour used to make tortillas and other foods. It's a move aimed at reducing Hispanic infants' disproportionately high rates of rare and severe birth defects. A similar law takes effect in Alabama in June, with legislation pending or being considered in Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Oregon. Opponents see the mandate as government overreach or claim folic acid is toxic, without evidence. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy criticized California's law. But medical and nutrition experts praised it as a public health triumph.
