It's not a miracle cure. I have a talk event live recording that needs to be processed quickly, and its not for publication and also not paid extra… yet as often with live stereo recordings, the levels go up and down way too much.

For speakers who had used the microphone more or less properly I can find a setting that works well. For those holding the mic towards the belly button while moving their head a lot,… well, can't rescue those.

I'd really love to test a #JüngerAudio #LevelMagic unit but I can't sell my car to afford one used…

Kürzlich ist mir doch offenbar tatsächlich eine #Sandisk #ExtremePro #SDcard im #AllenHeathCQ #Recorder abgeschifft.

Ein Teil der Aufnahme fehlt. Keine Fehlermeldungen in dmesg (#Linux) oder anderweitig beim Auslesen. Vermutlich ist einfach die Schreibgeschwindigkeit eingebrochen unterwegs.

Zum Glück nicht relevant für die Dienstleistung in dem Fall, aber wenn jemand eine #Aufnahme bestellt, darf das nicht passieren. Leider habe ich einen ganze Tüte voll dieser Karten, und auf keine mag ich mich mehr verlassen.

Kaufe ich nun die Sony Tough, 128GB für 99€ (Sonderangebot)? Aua aua aua!

Am Besten im Zweifel via USB-Strippe in der DAW eine Backup-Aufnahme mitlaufen lassen. Ungemütlich.

Introducing you to Peter Enis, my new cheap 32bit floating point field recorder.

Actually I haven't used 32bit float ADCs at all so far. In theory, these have a dynamic range of around 1680dB.

Yet 24bit int has a dynamic range of 144dB and to my knowledge there is no audio interface / ADC that actually provides this range. Because very quiet signals will drown in preamp noise and the mud of low integer resolution, while very loud signals will clip the converters.

32bit float audio as a data format could solve this, as very quiet and very loud signals all have the same precision, yet I doubt physics allows preamps with a noise floor at -1680dB.

So how are these cheap recorders doing the trick with the actual dynamic range? I'd really love to know.

The promise is obvious: No gain control needed, just run and gun, and it will never ever go into clipping.

Der Vorteil beim Sammeln von Mikrofonen gegenüber dem Sammeln von Gitarren oder Schuhen ist, dass man eine Vielzahl davon gleichzeitig nutzen kann.

Vom #MoersFestival heute schon zuhause, habe ich nun mal wieder gesteigerte Lust, wieder #Unplugged-Acts zu mischen wie früher zu Zeiten von #Folklang in #Tübingen. Schließlich ist feiner Sound eine meiner Kernkompetenzen.
