This morning has been the worst pain so far, woke up from a nightmare (probably because of the pain) accompanied with my son waking up and not feeling tired, fighting sleeping and trying to use his tablet. that was at 430 thankfully i got him back to sleep by fixing the lights and giving him a few screen free options for if he was truly completely unable to sleep. I fell back asleep for a couple hours then woke up a bit ago in very intense pain

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Ice Cream Gets Your Kid Though A Tonsillectomy A clinical trial just published in the International Journal of Pediatric Otolaryngology found that children who ate ice cream after surgery had better pain control compared to those who didn’t. The study group included 48 children undergoing this common childhood surgery. The data showed that, at 6, 12, and 18 hours post-op, children consuming ice cream reported significantly less pain, required less pain medication, and were able to resume oral intake sooner. The ice cream did not trigger an increase in post-operative complications. Children recovering from a tonsillectomy do need some non-narcotic pain medications. Cold, sweet ice cream does help the medicine go down. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0165587625000412 #tonsillectomy #icecream #pain #analgesics"

Should a Resident Help Do Your Kid’s Tonsil Surgery?
YES. When a trainee takes part, the incidence of an urgent postop ER visit is reduced 42%. #tonsillectomy #resident #bleeding #ERvisit

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Should a Resident Help Do Your Kid’s Tonsil Surgery? While many parents of children entering a university teaching hospital for a tonsillectomy will say, “ I don’t want a student involved in my child’s surgery,” they would be making the wrong choice since the answer is YES. A University of Buffalo study now shows that children having their tonsils removed are 40% more less likely to require an urgent post-op ER visit if a resident takes part in the surgery. The researchers reviewed the cases of 2,051 children having tonsillectomies. Those kids who had a resident take part in their operations were 42% less likely to require an emergency visit later on. Even more interesting: the rate of post-op bleeding, the most dreaded tonsillectomy complication, was the same whether or not a resident took part. Only age was a factor in such bleeding with older patients experiencing more. If your child’s surgeon plans to include a trainee, the best bet is to welcome that young doctor to the team. Remember that residents are in training to learn techniques from their attending. When I and most of my colleagues operate with residents, we instruct the trainee to perform the procedure exactly as we would. If they stray from our roadmap, we take over. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0196070924000991?via=ihub #tonsillectomy #resident #bleeding #ERvisit"

Gave daughter dose of Tylenol at 0100 and she rated her pain 3/10. 👍🏽 #tonsillectomy

I'm on the edge about my daughter's SIXTH documented case of #StrepA. ENT requires SEVEN documented cases, and I'm so frustrated.

Of course I don't want to subject my child to unnecessary surgical procedures, but her snoring and repeated, nearly back-to-back cases of strep have affected her physically, emotionally, and academically with missed school.

I have made appt with alt #ENT doc to discuss possibility of exception for #tonsillectomy.

Sigh.
