"/s" tone indicator should just intuitively stand only for "sarcasm", because it taking less effort than being serious correlates to indicator's length. "ar" part that comprises "/sar" is simply redundant. /ser

@victorhck Hombre, "nadie" "nadie"...

"The Weaponization of Civility

How 'respectful discourse' silences dissent and prepares the ground for fascism

The first warning sign is not a shouted threat. It is a polite correction.

It sounds reasonable. Calm down. Choose better words. Let’s keep this civil. The message is framed as maturity, as responsibility, as a necessary condition for dialogue. But what it really does is shift the conversation away from what is being said and toward how it is being said. And once that shift happens, power rarely has to answer for itself.

Most people have encountered this move, whether in a workplace meeting, a school board forum, or a public comment thread. A difficult truth is raised. Someone becomes visibly upset. Instead of engaging the issue, the room focuses on tone. The critique is no longer evaluated on its merits. It is evaluated on whether it made anyone uncomfortable.

This is not just a social habit. It is a political mechanism.

Fascism does not begin with violence. It begins with behavioral standards that quietly redefine legitimacy. Before dissent is outlawed, it is discredited. Before opposition is crushed, it is framed as unreasonable, unstable, or dangerous. The language of civility is one of the most effective tools in this process because it disguises exclusion as virtue."

The Weaponization of Civility - Davis Vanguard

"Respectful discourse" can silence dissent and prepare the ground for fascism by prioritizing comfort over justice and appearance over reality, which can lead to a population trained to associate order with justice and silence with maturity.

@lucydev Espechally #4 of this is classical #TonePolicing as if #humanRights are debateable like preferences for underwear colours.

  • At some point those that "debate" peoples' rights to exist will push the wrong marginalized person which has nothing to loose but their own dignity and self-esteem, at which point, things will turn nasty...

I pray for that not to happen, but I am aware of that bieing statistically inevitable at the current rate!

No, your very 'nice' country does not get to pretend it is any better than the United States just because you have a centrist PM. You are just as bad. You are a part of the problem. Rather than confronting your incredibly racist and genocidal past and present you pretend that your version of Biden is saving you from fascist leadership while your PM continues to bend over backwards to appease Trump and the far right.

Your historic refusal to confront fascists on your own soil despite laws clearly permitting you to, turning of a blind eye to the hate they export across your only national border, the terrorists you harbor who cross that border freely whenever the heat in your southern neighbor gets too hot for them, and unwillingness to hold your ultra wealthy who help fund these movements on both sides of the border make you complicit.

Do not fucking pretend you aren't as bad as us Americans, do not police us for calling out your own fascism as much as we do our own, and do not pretend you are appreciably in a better place than we are.

You are lying to yourself. If you didn't root out your far right 20 years ago when your government was far more to the left than it is today you will NOT stop those fascists now, their takeover is inevitable and you are being complicit by not listening to the warnings from your southern border and acting accordingly.

Watching liberals like #TimChambers lecture people directly impacted by #CharlieKirk and his ilk as to how they 'should' react to his death has been a good refresher that #liberals & #progressives are not real allies to the marginalized. Even people who had been directly targeted have attempted to tell them the horrific impact on their lives but there is a refusal to permit people the right to their own feelings and reactions.

Charlie Kirk intentionally terrorized broad swaths of society, ranging from the LGBTQ community, to black, indigenous and people of color, to higher education professors (for whom he maintained a hit list) and many, many more.

It is utterly rational, and requires no defense that those on those lists or those who have any empathy for them would celebrate the fact that someone took him out. That does not mean they are calling for violence, it means they have had to live under threat for years, more than a decade in many cases, never knowing when one of his crazed followers would try to harass, assault or murder them and now that person is no longer there to incite such violence.

#TonePolicing those who have to live under such oppression is wrong, it is the opposite of ally-ship and makes clear that as we sink into further oppression they will NOT have anyone's back.

11 year old meme still true today.

Proof is in the pearl clutching...

They challenge your tone because they want to ignore the content.

Would have liked something in stark contrast to the Trump morass.

Instead, swap some details around and it could have been Jnr and Scaramucci.

(Does this count as #TonePolicing?)

Can see that having dad doing world-stage "across the aisle" while living as "Joe's son" would bias heavily towards feeling depersonalised.
Running away and changing his name might have made things better. But instead he kept sucking on the family tit.

Tone policing dismisses ideas by focusing on emotional delivery rather than content. It often silences marginalized voices and minimizes their issues. 💖🏾✨
