Go figure, JUST finished my repost of "Time & Tied: Escalation" to AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/72528136/chapters/188874546

Carrie's origin story is complete. Owing to people from the future manipulating her and her friends, she now has the power to control time. It was a bumpy road that included attempted suicide by time travel.

"Time & Tied: Destruction" will start posting in about a week. Previously posted to RoyalRoadL (link on my page), for the curious. #TimeTravelAuthors

It was too late to turn back. Behind us, the trail no longer looked the same. We had crossed a #threshold into the Shadow Land, Kakuriyo.

The monks beckoned us forward. “Bake ichō no sei,” I cooed to Sumika. “Ginkgo kodama, spirits of the ginkgo trees.”

Sumika prepared to visit the shrine by washing her mouth and hands in the mountain spring. I hopped down. The darting of little fish fascinated me for a moment. Then I washed. The drops of water were cool on my back, but not unpleasant.

Cleansed, Sumika clapped and rang the bell, accompanied by the monk’s gongs.

Light gathered over the kabuto, folding inward until it took the shape of a young man, straight-backed, hawk-faced, as composed as Lord Confucius. His austere dark robes were bound with a simple corded sash. Indigo light seeped along the cord binding the ledger tucked under his arm. In his other hand, he held a closed black lacquer fan. Energy gathered there as well. A small handscroll rested at his waist, secured as neatly as a blade.

My first instinct was to fly to a safer distance. His stillness wasn’t of calm, but of judgment. He hadn’t been a man who scattered peanuts for idle birds. This had been a person who counted to the last grain of rice.

“Minor samurai, administrator, Confucian scholar,” I cooed to Sumika. She would owe so me many peanuts!

“Ack!” Sumika made a deep ninety-degree bow, taking me completely by surprise.

#TimeTravelAuthors 19: Servants?

Jeeves! Julie's family is rich enough that she has two servants taking care of her house, Jeeves and Mimi. We never actually see the latter, but Jeeves often acts as Julie's father figure, and even briefly gets a point of view narration.

He doesn't appear in the sequel where characters are at university, but is referenced. No other servants in the story that I can think of.

#TimeTravelAuthors 03/19. Servants in your story

The Exotics is alternate 20th century - including servants of the early century. Uthodi Republic does not have servants, those tasks are made by technology. Republic's enclave and especially the city they had to take over does have servants and outright slaves. Freeing slaves is one thing, firing all the servants is not an option.

Many eras have servants. As wandering ghosts, neither Bijou nor Emily has personal servants. They do, however, stay at ritzy places where they do. Scene below is a clip from Episode 2: 1937: The Hindenburg

"I couldn’t stand her when she was on the musical. The way she barked out orders at you, like you were her servant. But I had no clue it was that bad. If I had known, JT and I would have snatched you away from her in two seconds flat."

At least one version of Rocky has maids and a butler. I assume the primary version does, too. We also meet a maid in Immigrants' Journey! #HistorytownAZ

#TimeTravelAuthors 17: Patience?

Jenny has vast reserves of patience, since Carrie being delayed in going back in time to save her results in her quantum state tied to Carrie's life.

Peaches has demonstrated patience with Carrie on a few occasions, though hormones may have helped. Ditto Chartreuse, come to think.

Most of the cast needs patience interacting with Heather, and vice versa.

Sherlock has been patient about romance with Jenny. Finally, Carrie has been a patient.

Rather than leave the way we had come, I decided to time-trip out. The less information we gave our foes, the better. Apparently, they knew we could time-travel, but we could hold dematerialization as a trump card.

I took Emily’s hand and thought about our next destination. “Take us to my university office on the day the pink rat arrives from the future.”

The familiar sensations of time-tripping took over, and we appeared in a small academic office. Green streamers hung from the window, and a mega plushy papillon wearing an emerald top hat sat in the guest chair. A small plastic Buddha rested on the desk next to a picture of a young woman and me. Behind them stood the brick wall of an #Irish pub. The picture triggered a sense of profound sadness, but no memories.

Emily burst out laughing when she saw the clothes I’d manifested. “Nice duds. Is that what the daring avant-garde wear in your time? Absurd, but it’s charming in its own way.”

I pulled the floppy hat down and the N95 mask up higher, hoping they might hide how red my cheeks were. They probably matched the large cherry-red sunglasses I was sporting. I’d considered wearing a hijab but was unsure about the cultural implications of a nonbeliever wearing one. “I told you I don’t want people to see two Professor Henrietta Dubois’s.”

“Professor Tweedledee and Dum,” Emily joked.

I tipped up my glasses and rolled my eyes. She laughed.

“And this must be a young Tweedle-dumb,” she said, looking at the picture. “You look happy.

She stopped, tapped a signature, and said, “Who's Sarah Lockwell?” The amusement on her face had faded.

“I don’t remember.” My response wasn’t an evasion. I truly didn’t remember.

“Shame,” she said, but it didn’t sound as if she meant it.

Next, she walked around the desk, materialized her hand, and opened the bottom drawer. “Brandy. You were a bit of a lush, weren’t you, Professor Dumb?”

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I’m a spy, sleuthing.”

“Well, be careful. You’ll get caught snooping.”

“You’re the only one who can see me.”

“Right, I forgot.”

After that, I sat #patiently on the edge of the guest chair while Emily continued to investigate. “Faustus Pakt, Liber Juratus, Pompilius’ Spiegel,” she read as she browsed the books on a shelf. “You had quite an interest in Faust and medieval grimoires.”

Having no memory of my prior reading, I didn’t comment.

Emily had moved back to the desk when the door opened, interrupting her investigation. In the corridor stood an outraged Professor Dubois, carrying a pink rat in a cage.
