I study nuclear science, I love my classes. I've got a crazy general who wears dark glasses. Things are going great, and they're only getting better...

Pat MacDonald and The Essentials, Essentialist Propaganda, 1983 on Counter-Pop

Pat MacDonald would go on to be one half of Timbuk 3 with his wife Barbara Kooyman, listed here as Barbara K. MacDonald. “Too Much Sex (Not Enough Affection” from this EP also was later on Eden Alley in 1988.

Pat MacDonald and The Essentials put out one full length album and this EP, which was recorded in Chicago. (The MacDonalds formed Timbuk 3 in Madison Wisconsin before relocating to Austin).

I was super excited to find my copy at Antone’s Records in Austin TX – so far as I know (or discogs knows) there’s only been one pressing.

Listening to melancholy acoustic covers of 80s and 90s tune on an overcast Saturday. Lots of things I could be doing, but none of them feel particularly compelling.

Talking on telephones
Cross time zones
Paying the futility bill
Praying for rain
Punching clocks
Changing the world like I change my socks

Timbuk 3, Greetings From Timbuk 3, 1986 on I.R.S. Records

Debut album from Pat MacDonald and Barbara Koyman MacDonald, the husband and wife duo better known as Timbuk 3 (sometimes written Timbuk3), featuring their most well known single “The Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades.”

Such great songwriting on this and all their albums – people sometimes think of them as a one-hit wonder but really there are a ton of great songs on all their albums – well worth picking up if you come across them.

My copy—again via Vinyl Destination in Lowell MA—is an early pressing from MCA Gloversville, with the lyrics sheet but without the custom I.R.S. Records inner sleeve.

This band can be more endearing that Fleetwood Mac or Bob Dylan!!??!!?

> The former members of Timbuk 3 have refused to license the song for commercials, including a $900,000 offer from AT&T and offers from Ford, the U.S. Army, and Bausch & Lomb for their Ray-Ban sunglasses.

The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades - Wikipedia

The song tells the story of a young, nuclear scientist dreaming about his rich future in the impending nuclear holocaust during the height of the Cold War era. Unfortunately, the song became unironically popular as a graduation/prom song.
