Il Tempo: Nutrie arrosto a Pasquetta? Bassetti: "Come mangiare i topi"
Roma, 7 apr.
Roast nutrias for Maundy Thursday? Bassetti: "How to eat rats"
Rome, April 7 (Adnkronos Salute) - "On Easter Monday, you eat river otters. The health risks are exactly the same as eating rats. The most incredible thing is that they don't administer experimental gene serums, but they eat rats/otters.” This is what infectologist Matteo Bassetti said on social media about what happened in Gerre de’ Caprioli (Cremona), where the mayor – initially on social media and then amplified by several media outlets – advised citizens to consume river otters like any other meat.
In the Facebook video, Mayor Michel Marchi, a passionate cook, explained the recipes for roasted otter and otter ragu, using the slogan ‘Sunday on the river, Sunday NUTRIent!’ These rodents have left their habitat to colonize even large cities like Rome, and they are now widespread with many sightings in the Tiber.

Just a short distance from Rome, the landscape suddenly feels wild. Reeds moving in the breeze, the quiet flow of the Tiber, and wildlife constantly appearing along the riverbanks.
Guided by Alessandro on behalf of Nature of Sal, our international group explored the protected wetlands of the Tevere–Farfa Nature Reserve — a hidden sanctuary where nature quietly thrives.
One of the highlights of the day was drifting along the Tiber in a small boat, seeing the reserve from a completely different perspective. Surrounded by water, birds, and silence, it felt like discovering a secret corner of Lazio.
At the same time, with another group, Sal guided a hike along the urban stretch of the Tiber in Rome, an important wildlife corridor within the city.
Thanks to everyone who joined, see you at the next hike! 🙏
