Today, I go in to volunteer at one of the many member-run galleries here in Humboldt County, the Redwood Art Association. It’s the oldest and biggest—250 members founded 70 years ago.

It’s a good group of folks. I enjoy my time there. It’s a lovely gallery. They’re taking down the current exhibition today and doing intake for their 68th Annual Spring Exhibition show going up next week.

I’ll be submitting these two limited edition signed and numbered prints: Thumbelina and Night Heron.

This piece is based on Thumbelina, a fairy tale by Hans Christen Anderson. I'm not really a fan of the story, but there are a lot of moments in it that can be visually intriguing, and after thinking about it I was hard pressed to choose which image I wanted to do!

I settled on a moment in the story where "Tiny" (as she's nicknamed) ends up sitting in a flower. I chose to insert some patterned texture, making the piece feel more "mixed media" than I usually paint.

Finished this up in my livestream on Monday. It’s my take on Hans Christian Andersen’s “Thumbelina”, done in a heavily textured Art Nouveau style.

It’s another in my series of fairy tales and fables. Took me 12,195 strokes in Procreate, and 14h 51m to complete.

I tried adding in some different pattern textures this time around, giving it a bit more of a “mixed media” feel. I used some of Spanish illustrator Ittai Manero’s brushes from his Dynamic Stippling and Patterns brush set. I love his brushes.
