Transition. It can mean different things to different people. Here's what it means to some of the many local changemakers involved in our movement - and why it's important...

"What I started it was all about sustainability and climate change - now I know it's about community..."

Transition group @playthinkbrink welcomed broadcaster and activist Chris Packham for campfire tea and chat at their meantime use space in the centre of Belfast recently.

Gawain Morrison, co-founder of Brink, said: "Just as it was about to snow, we sat round our fire pit & chatted about this part of the city, the heritage growing project on the site, with our partners Grow NI & quarto, the broken food system, renewables, activism & punk bands. Not a bad way to start the morning."

The project aims to spark conversations and new thinking about how their city of Belfast can transition to a better future. Chris added a message on heritage linen to their story ring: “Winning is not giving up and the fuel is love and rage”

Transition Skillshare - Harness creativity for change

Wed, Dec. 11th, 2024

“Each of us individually has a role to play- and the future is partly up to us to create and shape together in community, in dialogue, in connection with each other.”

Town Anywhere is an immersive and creative way to imagine the future, and start to make real our own roles in building it. And it's coming to Transition Town Tooting this weekend, and next month to Transition New Mills!

Here’s a sneak peak at the treat they have in store: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUQWRjqy6Yo

"What difference can Transition groups and others doing this work make? It often starts with some small initiative like planting trees or wildflowers, sharing food at a community fridge or bringing people together to talk about the future.

"Often this cascades, as people get to know and trust each other, to see what they can achieve together, and learn from other groups and places what else is possible.

"Transition groups have set up farmers’ markets, community food-growing, waste-food cafes, nature recovery projects, cycling and electric car clubs and community-owned renewable energy generation."

Did things start small in your Transition project? Have they grown in new and unexpected directions??

Why Transition? And why now?  - Transition Together

Chris McCartney explores how Transition can be the antidote to feeling overwhelmed and underpowered to respond to the many big challenges we're facing, and why this is great moment to get involved.

Transition Together

It’s Libraries Week and we’re celebrating the many different libraries of all sorts run by Transition Groups.

Like Share Portsmouth, running a library of things and repair cafe base out of a shopping centre in the middle of their town, making it easier for folks to get hold of items they use occasionally without having to buy, ship, store or chuck them once they are no longer needed.

Transitioners in towns, cities and rural areas are running libraries of things, helping their communities become more connected and resilient, and people to share what they have and get what they need at much lower cost to their pockets and the planet.

Visit or join your local Library of things, or spread the word and see who's interested in starting one in your area and let’s make this as handy and widespread as possible!

Some examples we're celebrating today! Sustainable Tiverton's Share Shop Tiverton - A Library of Things, Transition Buxton Zero Carbon Guildford SERO Kew The Transition Little Seed Library Sustainable Starts children's clothes and nappy libraries, Exmouth Library of Things, and Crystal Palace Transition Town helped start the first Library of Things in London, The Green House St Albans and Transition Leytonstone have fab collections of environmental books to lend.
And taking inspiration from the many other libraries of things across the country! The Edinburgh Tool Library Share Shed - A Library of Things SHARE Oxford Bath Share & Repair, Hull Library of Stuff and more!

Sustainable Starts was only born last year to help families find affordable and easy ways to make more green choices - now it’s growing up fast!

The Liverpool-based Transition group runs a nappy library, regular clothes swaps, an eco-playgroup, partyware hire and its piloting a baby clothes lending scheme, where parents pay £2 a month for a bundle. When these clothes are outgrown, the set can be returned for the next size up.

Started by four parents who know only too well the juggle of bills, kids, sleep and trying to do the right thing, they’ve always been motivated to bring families together and offer really practical, easy options. A Transition Together/Community Fund seedfunding grant helped them grow and try new projects out - now that experience has helped them secure a bigger £20,000 grant by the National Lottery Community Fund to further expand.

The group said: “This funding will support us to keep delivering the projects we've got, and to expand what we're offering - watch this space..." We certainly will!

Super exciting that Transition Stroud's e-bike hire project is set to grow from 5 to 25 bikes this autumn!

Volunteers currently lend bikes from 3 pick up points, helping people get around the rural and hilly area more easily, affordably and car free.

They set up the project with a range of community groups and The Bike Drop with seed funding from Transition Together and The National Lottery Community Fund. Now they've proved it works and unlocked additional support to expand into more locations, reach more people and loan half the new bikes at reduced rates for people on low incomes.

Jess Farr of Transition Stroud said: “We're hopeful that this project will encourage more people to choose to ride by bike - for work, school runs or just popping to the shops.”

Bike borrower Thea Pilikian echoed this: "I found the confidence to go on any road and conquer any hill, it was a very empowering experience to be given that freedom all on my own enjoying the peace, power and pleasure of a bike!"

Homes and public buildings in Bewdley could be heated using water from the river in an innovative river renewable scheme being put forward by the local Transition group.
Transition Bewdley has been working on reducing the town’s energy use and moving it to renewables for years - then a study found it was one of the sites to explore a river heat scheme.

At a public meeting this week, they unveiled the promising results of a feasibility scheme into putting an energy centre in the ground of Bewdley school, where heat from river water would be extracted and boosted and hot water pumped to nearby homes in insulated pipes.

Amazing how volunteers and communities are taking forward new thinking and new projects to reveal new sustainable and innovative ways to meet local needs!

Congratulations to SERO on the grand opening of their new Scrapstore on Saturday!

It feels like the challenges facing us require all our creativity, imagination and resourcefulness as we face them together. that's the story this project is telling each and every day, as local people in Carmarthen find new ways to come together, to share what we have and to build wonderful new community solutions.

Folks joined in with all kinds of upcycling and crafty materials, and the Scrapstore joins the community climate hubs other regular projects, a Library of Things, New2Us swapshop for children's supplies, skillshares, repair cafe and much more.

Don't you think there should be one in every town?!
