During one of those periods in which the UK gov. removed #Loyalist Protestant #terrorist group #UVF from proscription, it carried out, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1974, the #DublinAndMonaghanBombings — the deadliest series of attacks of #TheTroubles, with 33 killed and ~300 wounded.

Over 300,000 British soldiers were sent to #NorthernIreland during 25 years of #TheTroubles.

Those troops killed 315 people. The overwhelming majority were Catholic civilians including women, 2 priests, and over 60 children. But only a handful of #BritishArmy prosecutions took place. Few were convicted, and many of those were released early.

The #GoodFridayAgreement was signed on #ThisDayInHistory in 1998 by the UK, #Ireland, and #SinnFéin for the #IRA. Its goal of a devolved government, dismantling #ethnocracy, and ending #TheTroubles has been largely successful, even if an artificial border still divides families.
