Apropos of nothing I just had to think about The Shadow Magazine #6, The Death Tower, which had one of the funniest sequences I came across in pulp fiction.
In the book much is made about a weird bronze statue that seems to be killing people for the villain by supernatural means.
Only late in the story we learn the statue is in fact a rather ugly guy paid to act like a statue to sneak up on any opponents the villain has.
