If you’ve been meaning to watch “The Secret Agent” and have been putting it off, go ahead and watch it. It’s a very good film. Watched it in two installments cuz it’s longish.

Is The Secret Agent good?
I'm not sure of what to think. It's a complicated movie, and I loved the full immersion in 1970s Brazil, the mesmerising profusion of characters, the bombardment of cultural references, some of the acting, but I also disliked the many distracting subplots, the weak story, and the (pointless?) ending.
Oh, well.

Of the 5 of this year's Best Picture nominees I've seen, Sinners is my favorite, with Hamnet close behind.
The other 3, in order of preference, are:
The Secret Agent, One Battle After Another, Bugonia.
The last 2 absolutely do not deserve to be considered Best Picture despite having many excellent aspects.
Overall, the last two are too inconsistent and problematic in too many ways, for me.

The Secret Agent is good but too slow and the first hour and a half is just too much and needs editing.
It does a great job of immersing us into its world; it's almost cinema vérité.
Gritty, sweaty, and earthy, it's a sensory movie that makes the environment almost palpable.
Wagner Moura is excellent and is the thread that weaves the past, present, and future of the story into a tapestry of Brazil's recent history, nightmares and all.
