Reading Robert Frost poems as poems by Paul Laurence Dunbar

Yesterday, I interpreted the white American Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" (1915) as a poem about a fugitive from enslavement by the African-American Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906). In a sense, when I read the poem that way, I find it even richer than it is when read as

The road to freedom in Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “The Road Not Taken"

"The Road Not Taken", by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906), imagines a fugitive from enslavement deciding which road to take to freedom. The yellow birch forest he is passing through in autumn sheds its leaves on both possible routes and renders them indistinguishable from each other. The leaves may not have

A Milestone in Poetry August 1, 1915

Just had to share this moment with you.

On this day in 1915, Robert Frost’s iconic poem “The Road Not Taken” was first published in The Atlantic Monthly.

More than a century later, its opening lines still echo in our hearts:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both…”

It’s a poem about choice, about paths and possibilities — but also about how we tell the story of our lives. A gentle reminder, today and always, that sometimes the quietest decisions become the most meaningful.

Here’s to the roads we’ve taken… and the ones we still might.

Every time I lean into my bathroom sink to spit toothpaste, I'm convinced I'm going to poke my eye out with the point of the rattail comb that's in the mug with my toothbrush, pill box, scaler, and cuticle tool, but if I replace it with a less stabby comb, I think "Well, this coif ain't gonna rat itself," so the comb and the consequent fear remains.
