Driving is an experience of signs and pictorial panes. And that fascinates me. The wonderful irony of this piece, for me, is that all of the photos of signs and things were taken not from inside the car, but standing on the street (and trying not to be hit by cars).

This was made with probably 15 thermal prints cut and pasted together, with white wax crayon to “dissolve” the pictorial space and create a roadscape that never existed.
Michael Stipe of #REM tells a story that he had no lyrics for the song that would become Man on the Moon until, on the last day of recording, he walked around Seattle with the music on headphones. The lyrics came to him.
I wanted to recreate this, so I took my thermal print camera to the spot of their old #Seattle studio, walked around, and snapped from the hip. Later I embedded one word from the chorus on each photo with a thermal printer.
