If you ask me, a stellar self-titled debut from the short-lived supergroup, The Power Station, featuring Robert Palmer on vocals, Andy and John Taylor of Duran Duran on guitar and bass, and the unmistakable Tony Thompson of Chic on drums. Some albums feel overproduced, whilst others manage to be stylistically bold yet retain a cool, timeless edge. This record falls firmly into the latter category. Yes, it undeniably sounds like a product of its era, and there are moments when the mix feels over-compressed and gated, but the songs, swagger, and sheer musicianship more than compensate. The grooves are tight, the riffs are infectious, and the energy is palpable throughout. Tracks like "Some Like It Hot", "Murderess" and their take on T. Rex’s "Get It On (Bang a Gong)" are hypnotic, as they lodge in my mind long after the music stops. Equally compelling are the slightly different ,but still excellent tracks like "Communication" and "Go To Zero", which showcase the band’s versatility. Ultimately, I feel the name 'The Power Station' perfectly captures the raw, kinetic energy the band exudes, and this album therefore comes thoroughly recommended. It is little wonder that Robert Palmer followed up just months later with his solo album, 'Riptide', which retained a similar sonic character and featured contributions from some of the same musicians, particularly Andy Taylor and Tony Thompson.
