When the lights go out
I watch your struggle
My spirit takes hold of your mind
You try squirm, you try to fight
You cannot see me in the dark

Frozen in fear, you try to scream
Your voice echoes, but no one hears
Sweat runs in your eyes
Mixes with the tears you cried
The more you struggle, the more I smile

Do not fear the pain inside
The horror within is in your mind
You struggle with instability
Overthinking your insecurity
Your illness is in your mind

Every word and every smile
What do they mean
Why do they smile
You created your reality
It’s time for you to escape and be free

My theory is that as the world improves, expectations rise even faster, leading to the persistent illusion that the world was better in the past. The only time the illusion is punctured is when a society is successfully digging out of a very big slump.
