I suppose the thing I give #TheOrville the most credit for is that they don't shy away from the reality—indeed, they kind of lean into it—that if something like the holodeck actually existed, then obviously the thing it would be most used for, at least by humans (I wouldn't presume to project our weaknesses on other space-faring species), is sex.

@crow @jik FWIW, I love #TheOrville and consider it worthy part of the #StarTrek multiverse. (Moreso than some shows produced by CBS.)

I've been working my way through #TheOrville for the first time, posted a couple times here about how unimpressed I've been.
Then I got to the two-part "Identity" episode, and holy shit, it's like a completely different show. So, so much better. And the few episodes after that also had dramatically different tone and quality.
So I looked it up, and lo and behold they totally revamped the series starting with that episode.
Were none of you going to tell me? Why you hold out on me like that?

I binged the end of Season 1 and much of Season 2 of #TheOrville until 4:30am this morning. Season 2 is significantly better than Season 1. I'd put the quality range of Season 2's episodes at mediocre to pretty good, vs. extraordinarily bad to mediocre for Season 1.
But I don't think it's wise to skip Season 1, because it's one of those shows where there's enough continuity between episodes that you don't get the full impact of the good episodes unless you watch the show from the beginning.

Consider the best of what recent #StarTrek has to offer:

Erica Ortegas and Hemmer on #StrangeNewWorlds #SNW were new characters with quick wits, interesting quirks, and relatable complexities. Since their fates were unknown, the writers could do anything…even kill them off…while still respecting the existing canon that gives Trek a rich universe to play in.

And don't forget #TheOrville's popularity: This alternate Trek timeline is all about the characters and optimistic stories. We want more!
