JACOB'S REUNION
"JACOB'S REUNION" (1975)

Just 50 years ago, the old Chelsea House in West Brattleboro recorded and released an album that had a very big impact around here.

The 1970s brought great changes to the Brattleboro area's music community. John Clark started his first tour of duty at WTSA, Cap'n Bullfrog's record store opened in the Latchis building, Ralph and Pat Baker started up their Sound Hole musical instrument shop on Elliot Street, John and Tony arrived at Marlboro College, and the Chelsea House opened for a run of about seven years of concerts and folk dances. The release of this album, "Jacob's Reunion" on Chelsea House Records, was one of the biggest events. The download option appears after clicking the downward-pointing caret to the right of the album's heading. Several cuts from this album were especially popular. The first of those to come up is Track 2, "Ontario."

This photograph, black and white or colorized, has appeared online many times. It must be from the collection of Sir Postalot. So, I am putting this here mainly for the text. At the same time, the picture's colorization is different from any I have seen.

When researching this building, the Jacob Estey Homestead, in the 1950 US Census, it came as quite a surprise to see that Spero Latchis resided here at that time. As I recall, his occupation was listed as a movie theater operator.

It is hard to imagine life in Brattleboro without The Latchis.

My Facebook comment asked who remembered the time when the Latchis was operated, in the 1970s, as the Capra Theatre. It ran double features of classic movies. Some favorites included Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, and the Marx Brothers. We used to watch from the balcony but it seems to me the balcony may have been closed before the Capra run ended. Planet of the Apes drew the biggest crowds but I skipped that one.

At 85, a Brattleboro movie palace offers a picture of storm resilience

“We’ve come through an awful lot over time,” says the head of the Latchis, “a town within a town” theater, hotel and business block that opened during the Great New England Hurricane of September 1938. “That just makes us very empathetic to others.”

The accompanying photograph of Tropical Storm Irene flooding is less dramatic than video shown on national television, though the still photo gets the point of localized immersion across. The other end of Flat Street, over the Elm Street parking lot, and throughout that whole area was the most amazing mass of mud.
