DetroitCineasteHow a pet and its new owner finding each other in The Friend is very familiar ground, but it works because the story is told with empathy and sensitivity. Naomi Watts and Bill Murray are touching as a professor and her mentor, who both accept a Great Dane into their lives. A charming little drama. Recommended.

The Friend

jpThe Friend starts out as a promising film about writers and writing. Sure, the writer’s block trope has been all but played out, and it seems a movie such as I’m describing ought to know that narration is for books. Nonetheless, The Friend’s first act is immeasurably better than yet another tale about a Big Friendly Dog, which is what the second and third acts settle for.
