18th finished book of the year: The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.5 ⭐️ - The series continues to expand, focussing less on the larger world building and more on the specific characters now that things are well established. Still just as entertaining and interesting as the first two.

If you thought that our heroine was already special, well wait! Turns out she’s at least twice as special as we initially thought. Finding out that our main character is actually the long-lost queen is not an unfamiliar concept to a Sim fan - it’s practically expected in fact. It’s also not strange to find out that she’s uncommonly powerful, but it’s starting to feel almost silly how she’s levelling up each book.

The political intrigue and battle between perceived good and evil escalates significantly, with a feeling of our little group being constantly embattled, suffering losses and setbacks. In this way, it’s kept constantly evolving and it doesn’t feel as if (despite being super special and powerful) there’s an easy path to victory for them.

Overall, despite the constant escalation, there’s a lot of found family forming, and a number of really touching moments between the members of the inner circle. I continue to find this series super engaging and I’m going to be sad when I reach the last current book!
