I knew that cars were really bad for everyone, but this video shows that I’d seriously underestimated the actual and extensive harm they cause. Please watch.

The Pushcart War

I’ve decided to go to the WWT London Wetland Centre on Monday, rather than drive out into the fens, thanks partly to the cost of fuel. I have also checked on the BoE inflation calculator and the diesel I would need is actually about 5% cheaper in real terms than when I passed my driving test - at which point, because that was its normal price, I wouldn’t have thought twice. It is the change in / (ab)normalisation of price that influences perception and decision about driving among those for whom it doesn’t constitute an affordability crisis.
Given the number of people in forced car ownership with genuine affordability issues and simultaneously the proportion of comfortably off people who whinge about the expense of driving but reject easy savings (get a smaller, not-new car; don’t change it every couple of years; use it less) and inflate their own costs, I’m not sure what we do with this.
(Though #BanCars has an elegant simplicity to it!)
