Tonight: haven't seen anyone over the past 4 years as much as Marta Sanchez and I don't think I've loved anyone more over that period than I've loved Bill Frisell, but I do not believe I'd ever seen them together before tonight. Needless to say, it was sublime. Trio set at the Stone with Ingrid Laubrock. As with everything in that room could've gone a million ways, but was a total lighter-than-air bliss-out. Three musicians in constant, sweet-nothing conversation with each other. Everything I dreamed it could be and then some. Perfection!

Wednesday last week I caught the Ches Smith Quartet at the Stone, the opening night of a rare two week stint in the room. It was quite fucking awesome, but I was quite sure it would get even better along the way. Returned tonight for the final night as they prepare to go into the studio tomorrow and, friends, it was a mindblowing set. The band is Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman on guitars and Nick Dunston on bass + electronics joining Smith on drums + vibes + electronics. The interweaving two guitars was some serious mindmeld stuff and the interplay between those two and the rhythm section was next level. Set of the year so far!

The Serbian purveyors of brooding black metal collectively known as The Stone quite literally blew this scribe away back in 2021 when they unearthed the near-flawless and deeply atmospheric gem titled Kosturnice, and so naturally, this latest opus of theirs released in late November this year was a most welcome addition to my pile of stuff to […]

Thursday night: one set after the train back to NYC. You never know what you'll get at the Stone and I got a weird one. I mean, whenever someone brings out a balloon to play as an instrument, it's an anything goes situation. Still some compelling moments mixed in. Willy Winant joined by Kenny Wollesen and Will Shore on a triple percussion journey.
Tonight: one of my new favorite moves, when it works out, is Wednesday opening night at the Stone > late set at the Vanguard. And it worked out quite nicely tonight...
1: cellist Erik Friedlander with Uri Caine, Mark Helias, and Satoshi Takeishi. Like a string quartet and a jazz ensemble met in the middle. Probably all improv, but hard to tell. Interleaved moments of sublime mesh and boundary-traipsing dissonance. When it was working it was something else.
Tonight:
First stop at the Stone for a set from Brian Marsella, Jorge Roeder, and Ches Smith playing John Zorn's Suite for Piano. Holy shit, that was some wild, amazing music. Zorn in the audience and hopefully he was as bowled over by Smith's drumming as I was. As electrifying an acoustic piano trio I've ever heard. Marsella playing JZ works all week, wish I could hit em all!
