Il pallone italiano non si è mai ritrovato così sgonfio, triste e solitario, calciato fuori dal rettangolo di gioco senza tanti complimenti. Tre settimane dopo la terza eliminazione consecutiva dal Mondiale, la conferma sullo scarso livello di rendimento dell’intero movimento arriva da Europa League e Conference League, con l’uscita di scena di Bologna e Fiorentina. I rossoblù escono con sette gol incassati nel doppio confronto con l’Aston Villa, mentre la Viola subisce quattro reti complessive dal Crystal Palace, 13esimo in Premier League. Un altro giovedì nero che certifica il momento più buio della storia del calcio italiano.
E pensare che negli ultimi anni almeno la piccola Conference League era servita a tappare le falle del nostro sistema: la vittoria della Roma, le due finali perse dalla Fiorentina. And precisely in that season, Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time.
From Inter’s “Triplete” (three-peat) victory, it has been 16 years since an Italian team has won the Champions League. So far, the longest drought went back to the Seventies, from 1969 to 1985, when Juventus triumphed.
Not only that: in four of the last six Champions League matches, all Italian teams were stopped in the eighth round.
In the Europa League, formerly the UEFA Cup, there has been only one success between 1999 (with Parma under Alberto Malesani) and 2026, that of Atalanta two years ago, counting the two finals lost by Inter and Roma.

“Io mi spacco la testa”. Scena surreale questa vista in diretta tv a Sky Sport mercoledì sera, quando nel commentare il post partita di Champions League, Paolo Di Canio ha cominciato a dare testate al tavolo dello studio Sky. L’ex attaccante italiano – oggi opinionista – ha reagito così a una domanda di Federica Masolin. “Quando le nostre squadre di Serie A potranno arrivare al livello della Premier League?”, chiede la conduttrice. Di Canio ha prima chiesto a Federica Masolin se intendesse provocarlo o se si trattasse soltanto di un tentativo di intimidazione. “Vuoi farmi intristire?”, chiede l’ex attaccante. Poi impazzisce, prendendo più volte a testate il tavolo tra alcuni sorrisi d’imbarazzo degli ospiti in studio, parecchio stupiti per l’accaduto.
“Tu mi hai provocato e io mi spacco la testa“, la frase di Di Canio tra le risate della conduttrice e di Fabio Capello, che si era alzato chiedendo “ma cosa hai fatto“, porgendogli un fazzoletto. Poi Di Canio ha ammesso: “Me so fatto male… me so fatto male davvero”, ha esclamato l’ex Lazio toccandosi la fronte. “Mamma che bernoccolo“, ha concluso Di Canio. Infine, l’abbraccio tra i due a chiudere un momento inaspettato e per questo surreale.
La scena per dinamica è stata simile a quella accaduta nella stagione 2016/2017 quando Luciano Spallettti – in quel momento allenatore della Roma – prese a testate il tavolo durante una domanda in conferenza stampa prima di rispondere al giornalista: “Chi ti ha mandato? Dimmi chi ti ha mandato, dimmi per chi vieni. Cosa vuole dire ambiente? Vuoi tornare a fare la stessa manfrina ‘Qui non si può lavorare?'”.

The former Italian striker – now a commentator – reacted this way to a question from Federica Masolin. “When will our Serie A teams reach the level of the Premier League?” the host asks. Di Canio first asked Federica Masolin if she was trying to provoke him or if it was simply an intimidation attempt. “Are you trying to make me sad?” the former striker asks. Then he loses it, repeatedly hitting the table with several amused smiles from the studio guests, quite surprised by the incident. “You provoked me and I’m pulling my hair out,” Di Canio’s words among the laughter of the host and Fabio Capello, who stood up asking “what did you do,” offering him a handkerchief. Then Di Canio admitted: “I’ve hurt myself… I’ve really hurt myself,” exclaimed the former Lazio player touching his forehead. “What a stupid bump,” concluded Di Canio. Dopo un inizio di stagione irreale, adesso Erling Haaland sta faticando in zona gol e il Manchester City ne risente. L’attaccante norvegese ha segnato in Champions League contro il Real Madrid (un gol inutile, vista la sconfitta per 1-2 e quella per 3-0 all’andata), ma non è riuscito a farlo tre giorni prima, durante la trasferta di Premier League in casa del West Ham, terminata 1-1. Colpa di diverse imprecisioni in area, ma anche di difensori – quelli avversari – che ci hanno letteralmente “messo la faccia” in alcune circostanze.
Come nel caso dello scatto poi diventato virale di Dave Shopland, fotografo che a marzo ha già scattato quella che si candida a foto calcistica dell’intero 2026. I protagonisti dello scatto sono Erling Haaland e Konstantinos Mavropanos, difensore del West Ham. Nel momento esatto della conclusione dell’attaccante norvegese, il pallone calciato con grandissima potenza da Haaland finisce sul viso del difensore greco, deformandosi in modo impressionante.
Shopland è riuscito a immortalare esattamente il momento dell’impatto del pallone sul volto di Mavropanos in uno scatto che dà l’idea della potenza del tiro respinto. Il pallone infatti – nella foto – è come se fosse totalmente sgonfio, mentre sullo sfondo si intravede il pubblico presente. Accanto a Mavropanos c’è il compagno Tomas Soucek, che osserva la scena con un’espressione preoccupata, dovuta probabilmente alla pericolosità dell’azione. Mavropanos è rimasto a terra dopo la conclusione e l’arbitro ha sospeso temporaneamente il gioco per permettere allo staff medico del West Ham di intervenire. Dopo alcuni minuti a bordo campo, il difensore è rientrato in campo stordito, ma comunque in grado di proseguire il match. Un’azione finita senza gol, ma che ha lasciato uno scatto che in brevissimo tempo ha fatto il giro del mondo.

After an unreal start to the season, Erling Haaland is now struggling in front of goal and the Manchester City feels the effects. The Norwegian striker scored in the Champions League against Real Madrid (an useless goal, given the 1-2 defeat and the 3-0 first leg defeat), but he couldn't do it three days before, during the Premier League away match against West Ham, which ended 1-1. Due to several inaccuracies in the area, but also of defenders – the opponents – who literally “put their face” in some circumstances.
Like in the case of Dave Shopland’s viral shot, a photographer who already took what is vying to be the photo of the entire 2026 football season in March. The protagonists of the shot are Erling Haaland and Konstantinos Mavropanos, a defender for West Ham. At the exact moment of the striker’s shot, the ball kicked with great power by Haaland ends up on the face of the Greek defender, deforming in an impressive way.
Shopland managed to capture exactly the moment of the ball’s impact on Mavropanos’s face in a shot that conveys the power of the deflected shot. The ball indeed – in the photo – is as if it were completely deflated, while in the background you can see the audience present. Next to Mavropanos is his teammate Tomas Soucek, who observes the scene with a worried expression, probably due to the danger of the action. Mavropanos remained on the ground after the shot and the referee temporarily suspended the game to allow the West Ham medical staff to intervene. After several minutes on the field, the defender returned to the field dazed, but still able to continue the match. An action that ended without goals, but which resulted in a shot that quickly went around the world.
