Overpaid but over-performing?
The issue is swelling like the belly of a fat cat, and involves the names sacred in football. The super coaches, those with the highest salaries and the richest biographies, after so much love struggle to regain the place they had in the hearts of fans before this championship was concluded. If for two of them, Max Allegri and Luciano Spalletti, the thumbs-down receives the effect of the disastrous final outcome for having thrown away qualification for the Champions League, which was almost assuredly just a Sunday ago for Milan even more than for Juventus, it cannot be said of Antonio Conte, who leaves Napoli after having won second place and the Super Cup. Adding last year's Scudetto means strengthening a respectable haul.
Yet even his name is taken and inserted into the geriatric crack of Italian football, which enjoys a very poor reputation. After the National Team, now out of the World Cup for the third time, Serie A is almost a second-division league in Europe, definitely less glamorous. The top players, the stars of the firmament, don't find interest in coming to us, except at the end of their careers. Too strong the English Premier League, the Spanish league, the French league and even the German league. Too great the technical and economic distances, the media power of clubs (Real, Manchester, Bayern, PSG among the most known) and the transnational character that add gold to teams already covered by enormous investments.
And so we return to the starting point. You don't win, and the reason is in the mediocrity of the players who go on the field but especially seems to be in the weakness of coaches emptied of that driving force that made them immortal and winners yesterday.
How long has Allegri not won? And how long has Spalletti been out? And how much has Conte spent on Napoli, how many second-hand players bought, and how many injuries suffered? How much did second place cost?
Our aging stars must contend with the forty-year-olds, the ferocious lions who have become known (and appreciated) beyond the borders. Enzo Maresca had glory with Chelsea, Francesco Farioli has just won the Portuguese championship with Porto and Roberto De Zerbi, after the abrupt interruption of his relationship with Marseille, accepted and won the bet of keeping Tottenham in the Premier League at whose desperate head he had been called.

L’Arsenal di Mikel Arteta ha vinto la Premier League. La frenata definitiva del Manchester City, fermato sull’1-1 dal Bournemouth, regala la matematica certezza del titolo prima dell’ultima giornata. I Gunners sono di nuovo campioni, 22 anni dopo la storica annata degli Invincibili di Arsene Wenger. Questa squadra magari non verrà ricordata come quella di allora, ma ha saputo rompere un tabù che stava diventando una maledizione. Ed è riuscita allo stesso tempo ad arrivare in finale di Champions League: al di là di come finirà contro il Psg, è arrivata in fondo alle due competizioni per club più importanti nel calcio di oggi.
I numeri raramente mentono: la squadra di Arteta ha fatto della solidità difensiva la sua forza principale ed è per distacco la miglior difesa della Premier. Ma anche il secondo miglior attacco, dietro solamente alla macchina da gol del City di Guardiola. Il gioco dei Gunners, fatto di tanto possesso palla e sfruttamento esasperato dei calci piazzati, è stato anche duramente criticato nel corso della stagione. In particolare, i blocchi nell’area piccola sui corner. L’Arsenal ha segnato più di un terzo dei suoi gol da palla inattiva. Ma ridurre tutto a questo sarebbe ingeneroso.

Brinda anche un italiano, Riccardo Calafiori. Dopo Mario Balotelli, è il primo calciatore azzurro a vincere una Premier da protagonista.

“Io mi spacco la testa”. Scena surreale questa vista in diretta tv a Sky Sport mercoledì sera, quando nel commentare il post partita di Champions League, Paolo Di Canio ha cominciato a dare testate al tavolo dello studio Sky. L’ex attaccante italiano – oggi opinionista – ha reagito così a una domanda di Federica Masolin. “Quando le nostre squadre di Serie A potranno arrivare al livello della Premier League?”, chiede la conduttrice. Di Canio ha prima chiesto a Federica Masolin se intendesse provocarlo o se si trattasse soltanto di un tentativo di intimidazione. “Vuoi farmi intristire?”, chiede l’ex attaccante. Poi impazzisce, prendendo più volte a testate il tavolo tra alcuni sorrisi d’imbarazzo degli ospiti in studio, parecchio stupiti per l’accaduto.
“Tu mi hai provocato e io mi spacco la testa“, la frase di Di Canio tra le risate della conduttrice e di Fabio Capello, che si era alzato chiedendo “ma cosa hai fatto“, porgendogli un fazzoletto. Poi Di Canio ha ammesso: “Me so fatto male… me so fatto male davvero”, ha esclamato l’ex Lazio toccandosi la fronte. “Mamma che bernoccolo“, ha concluso Di Canio. Infine, l’abbraccio tra i due a chiudere un momento inaspettato e per questo surreale.
La scena per dinamica è stata simile a quella accaduta nella stagione 2016/2017 quando Luciano Spallettti – in quel momento allenatore della Roma – prese a testate il tavolo durante una domanda in conferenza stampa prima di rispondere al giornalista: “Chi ti ha mandato? Dimmi chi ti ha mandato, dimmi per chi vieni. Cosa vuole dire ambiente? Vuoi tornare a fare la stessa manfrina ‘Qui non si può lavorare?'”.

The former Italian striker – now a commentator – reacted this way to a question from Federica Masolin. “When will our Serie A teams reach the level of the Premier League?” the host asks. Di Canio first asked Federica Masolin if she was trying to provoke him or if it was simply an intimidation attempt. “Are you trying to make me sad?” the former striker asks.
