Je vais voir The Gathering demain soir et ça fait bien longtemps que je n'avais pas été aussi impatient de voir un concert! #thegathering

Leimert Park: Roots & Branches Of Los Angeles Jazz by the Gathering, self-released in 2008.

The album is the result of a historic recording session and summit brought together on October 10th of 2005 by Jesse Sharps, one of the early bandleaders of Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Several well established local musicians such as Ndugu Chancler, Taumbu Ector, Kamau Daáood, Richard Grant, Azar Lawrence, Phil Ranelin, Roberto Miranda, and Michael Session joined members of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and young up and coming players on the scene like Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Brandon Coleman, Joey Dosik, Randal Fisher, Nick Rosen, and Kamasi Washington. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson brought in Peter Jacobson, Myka Miller, and Sara Schoenbeck to help round out the woodwinds and strings.

Three stories. All of them old machinery in new clothes.
The Fed's independence — built over a century — handed away via the most partisan central bank vote in Senate history. A World Cup field will be too hot for human bodies and FIFA scheduled the noon kickoffs anyway. A pastor lied about the science of human sexuality on camera and called it theology.
The Gathering held all three — and then tended to you. Herbs, breath, a benediction. The names of people who refused erasure.
This work runs because of readers like you. Every click on a supporter's ad, every paid subscription is a filament keeping independent queer journalism alive. We run on the mycorrhizal model — exchanging what's needed between people who'd otherwise be isolated in the dark.

Today's Gathering carries a lot.
A president who called a woman reporter "baby" during a war — then threatened nuclear weapons from the same podium — while standing in front of a monument he could not name.
David Attenborough at one hundred, watching the coral dissolve.
A German court hearing evidence of a gay man forced to his knees at knifepoint on November 9th, after police ignored documented death threats.
Three queer ancestors who built from nothing and left the infrastructure behind.
One Friday morning in May that asks something of you.
