AGI - L'amministrazione del presidente Donald Trump ha presentato ricorso urgente contro l'ordine di un giudice federale che ha bloccato la costruzione di una nuova sala da ballo alla Casa Bianca, sostenendo che lo stop al progetto potrebbe comportare rischi per la sicurezza nazionale.
Nel ricorso depositato presso la Corte d'appello del circuito di Washington - scrive il Washington Post - il Dipartimento di Giustizia contesta l'ingiunzione del giudice Richard Leon, definita "senza precedenti e impropria", chiedendone la sospensione in attesa della decisione nel merito. In caso contrario, l'amministrazione ha annunciato che si rivolgerà alla Corte suprema.
La giustificazione della sicurezza e i finanziamenti
Secondo il governo, la struttura da circa 8.400 metri quadri, dal valore di 400 milioni di dollari, è progettata per proteggere il presidente, la sua famiglia e il personale della Casa Bianca da minacce come droni, missili balistici, armi da fuoco e agenti biologici. Il giudice Leon aveva stabilito che il progetto necessita dell'approvazione del Congresso, respingendo la tesi della Casa Bianca secondo cui il presidente avrebbe piena autorità a procedere, anche tramite finanziamenti privati. L'amministrazione ha infatti ribadito che l'opera non utilizza fondi pubblici ma donazioni di sostenitori.
La causa e la decisione del giudice
La causa era stata avviata dal National trust for historic preservation, l'Ente nazionale per la tutela del patrimonio storico, che accusa Trump di aver aggirato le procedure federali demolendo l'East Wing e avviando i lavori senza le necessarie autorizzazioni. Nel motivare lo stop, Leon ha ridimensionato anche le argomentazioni sulla sicurezza: "l'esistenza di una grande buca accanto alla Casa Bianca è un problema creato dallo stesso presidente", ha scritto, pur concedendo una sospensione di due settimane dell'ordine per consentire interventi minimi di messa in sicurezza. La Casa Bianca si è detta "fiduciosa" sull'esito dell'appello, mentre il caso si prepara a diventare un nuovo fronte legale tra l'amministrazione Trump e le istituzioni federali.

According to the government, the structure, approximately 8,400 square meters in size and valued at $400 million, is designed to protect the President, his family, and the White House staff from threats such as drones, ballistic missiles, firearms, and biological agents. Judge Leon had ruled that the project requires Congressional approval, rejecting the White House’s argument that the President would have full authority to proceed, even through private funding. The administration has reiterated that the work does not use public funds but donations from supporters.
The Lawsuit and the Judge’s Decision
The lawsuit was brought by the National trust for historic preservation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which accuses Trump of circumventing federal procedures by demolishing the East Wing and starting construction without the necessary permits. In justifying the stop, Leon also downplayed the arguments about security: “the existence of a large hole next to the White House is a problem created by the President himself,” he wrote, while granting a two-week suspension of the order to allow for minimal safety measures. The White House stated it is “confident” in the outcome of the appeal, while the case prepares to become a new legal front between the Trump administration and federal institutions.
