Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles were known as “Bo and Peep,” “Him and Her,” “Do and Ti.” They shared the belief that they were the “two witnesses” described in the Book of Revelation. This reinterpretation, in which God was an advanced alien and Jesus a sort of cosmic messenger, became the basis of the cult. A path that culminated in that terrible March of 1997.
