Italian News by RSSIl Tempo: Spagna in campo invia la fregata Cristóbal Colon a Cipro: "Scopo difensivo"
La Spagna invierà la fregata Cristóbal Colon per proteggere Cipro dopo l'attacco iraniano scagliato contro la base britannica nell'isola. La Colòn è la nave tecnologicamente più avanzata del Paese: dotata di 200 persone di equipaggio, è lunga quasi 150 metri e ha un'autonomia di circa 4.500 miglia nautiche, ma soprattutto trasporta il sistema di combattimento Aegis e missili sia SM-2 sia ESSM, nonché un elicottero multiruolo SH-60B Seahawk. La sua missione sarà quella di fornire difesa aerea e supporto all'evacuazione dei civili congiuntamente alla portaerei francese "Charles de Gaulle" e alle navi della marina greca. La fregata spagnola si era unita lo scorso 3 marzo ai francesi per partecipare alle esercitazioni Fanal-19 e quindi svolgere compiti di scorta, protezione e addestramento avanzato nel Mar Baltico. Ma ora il gruppo si dirigerà verso il Mediterraneo arrivando al largo di Creta intorno al 10 marzo. A sostegno, la nave rifornimento Cantabria salperà a breve per fornire carburante e supporto logistico alle imbarcazioni durante il transito nel Golfo di Cadice. La missione della Colon integra "le capacità della batteria Patriot schierata dall'esercito spagnolo in Turchia" aggiunto il ministero della Difesa spagnolo.
Anche la Spagna dunque, nonostante scintille con gli Stati Uniti, scenderà in campo. Sebbene il governo di Madrid abbia precisato che la sua presenza abbia una funzione difensiva verso l'Unione europea e il confine orientrale, contrariamente all'offensiva condotta contro l'Iran.

Spain will send the frigate Cristóbal Colón to protect Cyprus after the Iranian attack launched against the British base on the island. The Colón is the country’s most technologically advanced ship: equipped with a crew of 200 people, it is almost 150 meters long and has a range of approximately 4,500 nautical miles, but above all, it carries the Aegis combat system and missiles such as SM-2 and ESSM, as well as an SH-60B Seahawk multirole helicopter. Its mission will be to provide air defense and support civilian evacuation jointly with the French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and the Greek navy ships. The Spanish frigate joined the French on March 3rd to participate in the Fanal-19 exercises and then performed escort, protection, and advanced training tasks in the Baltic Sea. But now the group will head to the Mediterranean, arriving off Crete around March 10th. In support, the supply ship Cantabria will set sail soon to provide fuel and logistical support to the vessels during transit through the Gulf of Cadiz. The Colón’s mission integrates “the capabilities of the Patriot battery deployed by the Spanish army in Turkey” added the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
Spain will therefore, despite sparks with the United States, get involved. Although the Madrid government has specified that its presence has a defensive function towards the European Union and the eastern border, contrary to the offensive conducted against Iran.
