13yo will be auditioning in April for a spot in next school year's Musical Theater class.

For her audition, she must choose & prep two contrasting songs from the Golden Age of musicals.

She has chosen:

"My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music &
"I Hate Men" from Kiss Me, Kate.

Yesterday she had her first coaching session with my dad, a retired opera singer.

This entire situation delights me beyond all reason. ☺️😍☺️🤩🤩🤩

Anti-Intellectualism: Clinging to "lack of privilege" and "lack of exposure to the arts" as a reason to, uh, [checks notes]… Rabidly insult anyone lucky enough (through dumb chance and no thanks to my actual life circumstances, I assure you) to HAVE that privilege and exposure? Not helping your cause, sweetie. If not everyone can fit at the table, you build a bigger table. You don't destroy the table altogether in a fit of spite.

Not sure how saying "there are $10 opera tix available" got to me being told to "take my meds and control my emotions," but… there you go. I guess if some people can't have nice things, then NOBODY should have nice things, instead of making nice things more accessible. And THAT is anti-intellectualism. HOW DARE YOU HAVE READ A BOOK. SOME PEOPLE CAN'T READ AT ALL. SHUT THE LIBRARIES DOWN. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF FOR NOT KEEPING YOURSELF IGNORANT AND EQUAL WITH THE LEAST OF THESE. NO ONE SHOULD RISE ABOVE THE LOWEST BAR.

Ah yes, the "cultural privilege" of being raised fundamentalist Christian so classical music was one of the few genres I was ALLOWED to explore. My bad.

Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith celebrates 250 years since its publication on March 9, 1776. This seminal book is considered the start of modern economics. He was a moral philosopher and his book; he gave moral legitimacy to earning an honest income by getting profits from professional activities and trade. Through this, the whole society would benefit collectively. Prices and profits would serve as an “invisible hand” and a guide for society. Adam Smith was not only interested in economics. He was also interested in the arts. In the lesser known ”Of the Affinity between Music, Dancing, and Poetry”, Adam Smith analyzed how the art forms are connected. His conclusion was that rhythm was foundational: ·       Rhythm organizes sound in music ·       Rhythm organizes bodily movement in dance ·       Rhythm organizes meter in poetry Smith thought it was likely that these art forms historically were performed together. Still, music and poetry could exist independently, but dance usually needed music because of the requirements of rhythm. Music and poetry could be combined into vocal music (songs). The idea of division of labor found in economics was something Smith wrote about in The Wealth of Nations. Perhaps, the picture that Smith painted of how the music, dance, and poetry had been divided into specialized professions within the arts is an expression of this, too. As the invisible hand guided towards an increased collective wealth in society, Smith thought that this was the key to an increase in the demand for painting, music, architecture, literature, and theater. In other words, business and art have a symbiotic relationship. Supervizion is a business consulting group that works with economics (business), the arts, and science. Clients in music, dance, literature get advice on business matters and business management of their companies.

It gets brighter, warmer, lusher out...and I feel like making something beautiful. So a place like this starts to seem really appealing to stay for a day...a week...a season...aw, let's be honest, the rest of the year. 🙃

She looks so cold...yet also like exactly the kind of girl who could dream up a song and sing it in such a way that you'll remember it unto the day you die...

"One doesn't work for effects, and one doesn't set up in the artist business. One studies and learns and works and thinks to develop oneself as an intelligent, sensitive, and aware human being: and out of the always-increasing resources of intelligence, sensitivity, and awareness, the human being makes music." — Leonard Bernstein, April 1967

Paul Rudnick: "Ric Grenell, Trump's repulsive lackey, says artists who've canceled performances at the Kennedy Center are niche talent. He is emphasizing shows for 'Republicans with families.' The upcoming season will consist solely of the movie MELANIA and videos of ICE agents murdering civilians."
