Me: I definitely don’t need any more spinning fiber. Look how much beautiful stuff I have that I haven’t spun yet
Also me: oooh look at this one. I need a Patreon membership to get it? Ok, Patreon it is. And I definitely need 8 oz so 2 braids. And ooh since I’m purchasing I might as well get the other two braids I was also coveting

I did a spin-to-knit-along with @Pufferfish and 2 other friends that also happened to occur at the same time as a larger spin to knitalong for the Jaunty shawl. The 4 of us spun the same braid of fiber and then used to it knit a Jaunty. I did mine chunky (my first chunky spin!) and then used a yarn from The Fibre Co as contrast. #HandSpinning #knitting #textilearts #FiberArts
I got back to spinning on my espinner (Zeniba, an Daedalus Starling) and knocked out a project pretty quickly due to relentless focus on getting it done over the last few days. The colors are Indulgent Eton Mess (the pink one) and Rhubarb Crumble (white with speckles of pink, purple, orange). I did “intuitive” spinning with it for whatever weight it wanted to be, and it turned out roughly worsted/Aran weight in a two ply. No idea what I’ll make with it. #HandSpinning #textilearts #fiberarts

Alright, I rewound it to count the loops again. It actually went terribly due to some horrible tangles that occurred in the process. But I managed it in the end, and I ended up win 299 loops @ 2 yds. Maybe even 300, accounting for the annoying issues I encountered. So not much shrinkage which at any rate is good to know.

279 yds per 100 grams

This braid is... the third attempt at a necklace cord for a necklace for my sister. And I am STILL not satisfied.

What I *want* is a cream-coloured braid (to go with a carved bone pendant) which is purely cream, no other colours, and which has contrasting texture through it, caused by a mixture of thick strands and thin strands.

Attempt 1: the thin strands were too beige, not cream.
Attempt 2: the entire braid was too thick; it might work as a choker, but not a necklace with a pendant.
Attempt 3: the braid has a nice thickness, but not enough texture contrast.

Part of me says "Stop! The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good!" and the other part of me says "I will not stop until I get it RIGHT! Otherwise I will look at it and only see how WRONG it is."

Kumihimo braiding on my Marudai. Playing with texture, a 16-strand braid with soft thick cream bamboo (8 strands) and thinner cream shiny wrapped cotton/acrylic/nylon (8 strands).

This does not explain why embroidery thread is sold in hanks, though.
Anyone here know why?

#textilearts #fiberarts #fibrearts @textileart @fiberarts @Sobtanian

I think yarn is sold in hanks because the standard process for hand-spun yarn is to make it into a big loop (with a tool called a Niddy-Noddy, don't ask me why it is called that), so that it can be soaked in water (kind of the yarn equivalent to blocking) and having the yarn like that enables the water to soak in evenly without tangling it all up. A hank is just that big loop twisted onto itself for compactness. Likewise, hand-dyed yarn also needs to be in that big loop in order for the dye to soak in evenly.

To then convert the hank into a ball is an additional step, which they often don't bother with. Also, the fact that the yarn is in a hank attests to its being hand-spun or hand-dyed "yes, we have the real handmade stuff here, look, it's in a hank!"

@Lemlems My most successful attempts at altering clothing (to make it bigger) with crochet; the method that worked best for me is to put blanket stitch (needle-and-thread sewing by hand) on the garment-edge that I want to attach the crochet to, and start crocheting into the blanket stitch. That should work for knitting too.Another method which is tidier but more effort, is to embroider chain-stitch near the garment-edge, and crochet/knit into the chain stitches.
