Imogen Sweater in progress. The tweedy nature of the yarn makes it look pretty busy but I’m hoping it will still seem really wearable once finished. Happily the width is working out close to what it is supposed to be even though I didn’t do a gauge swatch. It should definitely block to the right size. Fingers crossed it’s going to work out fine. Currently around 12 cm and need to make it to 38 cm before starting raglan shaping. #knitting #FiberArts #TextileArts
I decided to count winding 2 cakes of yarn from hanks for the sweater i haven’t cast on yet as my 5+ minutes of fiberarts today. #fiberarts #fibergoals #textilearts #knitting

I finished the Riggies Cowl I made with yarn I bought in Shetland from West Lynne. I didn’t do a perfect job of stitching up the back (that sewing is my least favorite activity) but it doesn’t bother me. It stands up really well (the pattern does say you have to use the right texture of yarn to get that effect) and fits exactly how I wanted it to. #knitting #shetland #yarn #FiberArts #TextileArts

Visited the #AmericanSwedishInstitute today for the exhibit "Handwoven: Between Chaos and Order" by Emelie Röndahl. She weaves "rya", a form of weaving that results in a sheepskin-like appearance. Traditionally the fuzzy side was down for warmth while the decoration was more legible on the flat side, but Röndahl plays with this convention. Here's both sides of a large work. One artifact of photographing the work is the contrast of the flat side is heightened-- it is more subtle to the unassisted eye.

A quick #FiberGoals check-in — after about a week break, I resumed my 5-10 minutes minimum FiberArts goal yesterday. Streak is currently at 2 days (lol). Anyway, I had originally set a goal of 24+ hexiflats for my beekeeper’s quilt and I’m pleased to say I’m ahead of schedule at 13 already this year. Of course the more the merrier since I need like 500+ for a full quilt and I don’t even have 100 yet so…. #knitting #FiberArts #TextileArts

Hear some of the community members from my most recent community quilt project speak about the project alongside other student projects!

I won't be there because I am working full time atm.

This is a repost of an earlier pic to focus on the spindles instead of the fiber. The left supported spindle is made of Indian rosewood and sycamore. The right Turkish spindle is black alder with a walnut shaft made by a local Shetlander who recently moved away. Both were bought at Eldamato. The center drop spindle has a whorl made of stone local to Unst - Serpentine - and was purchased at the town community center.

Spinning fiber and spindles: here is a drop spindle from a class we took at Eldamato from DJ, an amazing woman who emigrated to Shetland from America and opened this shop. She also gave us little samples of local Shetland fiber and other breeds (merino, and an amazing cashmere/silk blend). The braid is Shetland Wool hand-dyed in Shetland. I have no actual plans for this other than enjoying spinning it.

We went to Jamieson & Smith Wool Brokers. I didn’t buy any regular J&S. I did buy undyed fiber to spin. And I flipped through a book of patterns for tweed yarn and found a sweater I liked. And discovered this yarn is not easily available in the US - Croft Aran Tweed from West Yorkshire Spinners. I have 8 hanks. I’m excited to cast on to see how it knits up and also because the gauge means it should be a fast knit.
