Anderson, who was tortured and chained to a wall, wrote about his experiences in the best-selling memoir, “Den of Lions.” After returning to the United States in 1991, Anderson gave public speeches, taught journalism and, at various times, operated a blues bar, Cajun restaurant, horse ranch and gourmet restaurant. He also struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder.

My third grade teacher had a board in our classroom that counted the days he was held captive and we all wore yellow ribbons pinned to our clothes every day. Either he lived or his family was in a suburb of Buffalo (I was in third grade, don’t kill my for not remembering that detail!) so he was always referred to as a local boy and we had to keep attention on him.
