En av de marxistiska litteraturforskare som inspirerades av Althusser och Macherey var Terry Eagleton. I boken Criticism and Ideology från 1976 försöker han exempelvis utveckla en kritisk metodologi för studiet av litteratur som (åtminstone delvis) bygger på just Althussers och Machereys idéer.

Den litteraturvetenskapliga forskningen om klass dominerades länge (åtminstone i vissa kretsar) av den franske kommunistiske filosofen Louis Althussers teorier (ofta förmedlade via Althussers student och kollega Pierre Macherey). Så småningom begick dock många av de althusserianska litteraturforskarna fadersmord.
