It still feels cold for spring here but it’s a week until Easter so I am thinking about a nest of rabbits, part of my terms of venery series of linocuts for collective names for animals.

This linocut shows a conspiracy of lemurs in all senses of the words. The collective noun for a group of lemurs is a “conspiracy”. Isn’t that marvelous? These ring-tailed lemurs definitely appear to be up to something. Caught in the act of scheming. The word “lemurs” mimics their tails, of course!
The ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) is a wet-nosed primate, endemic to Madagascar. 🧵1/

For #WorldJellyfishDay it’s a smack of jellyfish!
The collective noun for a group of jellyfish is a “smack”. This amuses me, because I imagine them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five. To be honest, marine biologists speak of ‘blooms’ and we do tend to lump in a bunch of soft-bodies marine creatures into the term jellyfish, all of the gelatinous zooplankton in fact.... but ‘a smack of jellyfish’ is 🧵
Day 10 The #SciArtSeptember prompt tawny made me think of owls, do I am sharing my Parliament of Owls linocut.
I love the whimsical terms of venery for groups of animals and have an ongoing series of #linocut #termsOfVenery prints. For my parliament of owls I made two columns of local owls - you can decide for yourself which are the government and which the loyal opposition in 🧵

They also look great hanging from a bulldog clip or clothespin. They’re designed so you can have a mini-print to save afterwards and simply crop off the month at the bottom.

“Parliament” is in a gothic script. “Owls” has an owl eye for ‘o’ and the remaining letters are feathered. The owls are, right to left and top to bottom: the Eastern screech, Northern saw-whet, long-eared, Barred, Great Horned and the American Barn owls.

This #linocut shows an obstinacy of buffalo in all senses of the words. The collective noun for a group of buffalo is a "obstinacy". Clearly, these are hard-headed beasts. These ones have drawn a line in the sand. I dare you to cross it. Technically, these are American bison (Bison bison), known colloquially in North America as 'buffalo'. These mighty beasts were once obiquitous across the Great Plains. 🧵1/2
