I was having some issues with the man who was doing Mom's taxes today because he wasn't really listening to my questions for clarity. He kept interrupting me, giving answers that I wasn't asking about. I was talking to Mom in Teochew & relaying some of her questions to him too. One Asian woman overheard everything. She came out to help us out & she put the man in his place ๐
It was a senior tax preparer & she's the office manager too. I found out, serendipitously, that she's a #Gaginang - fellow #Teochew person! Meeting another Teochew person who speaks the language, in Victoria, is like finding a unicorn - it's very rare! The last time I found another Teochew in the public wilds was over 30 years ago!
Mom & I loved talking to her in our mutually shared language. It turns out that she's also a refugee from South Vietnam & her family has some roots near my Mom's village too. Amazing serendipity!

Toishan Kitchen on Burnside Rd, across from Tillicum mall, has authentic Canton & Teochew dishes. It is the only restaurant in the city that offers Teochew foods on their menu.
We only get take-out/delivery because we don't dine inside any restaurants.

This is the peasant food of my culture. Teochew porridge (you can feed a family with just half a cup of rice), preserved olive vegetables, sambal matah. The sides are usually salty things like braised tofu and steamed fish with fish sauce and preserved plums, but I just rustled up whatever I had (steamed egg, egg tofu, and canned mussels)
Teochew โmueโ is very different from Cantonese congee (โjookโ). The rice grains must stay whole, never broken or mushy; the water is unflavored; there is a higher water ratio (1:10 instead of 1:6 or 1:8). The mue is unseasoned so you can eat it with the freshest savory fish, eggs, and tofu

Part of my hearty #AsianBreakfast today is chai tow kway -> savoury #radish cake. I had it #TeochewViet style - fried, without eggs & with nuoc cham sauce poured over them.
When I do them traditional Teochew Chinese style, we fry them with eggs & eat them with a soy sauce/red vinegar/chili sauce blend.
